Here's something you've never thought could happen: a comedian being criticized for an old joke he/she made.
That's what comedian (and future host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central)
Trevor Noah got into a few weeks ago when, after the official announcement came in from the cable network that Noah will succeed the great Jon Stewart at the end of this year. Some old tweets from Twitter have resurfaced and they have seemingly painted Noah in a bad light. (It seems that bunch of people don't like Trevor Noah or just can't stand to see Jon Stewart leave) Here are some of the tweets that are supposed to be enough to have Noah's head on a stake (These come from 2011 and 2012):
One about being a rich Jewish man while making light of the Holocaust
Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn't look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car!
— Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) September 18, 2009
(I wish I could defend him by saying he's half Jewish and half Swiss-German, but I'm on the fence.)One about soccer superstar Lionel Messi, with a nice subtle message about Jewish women having sex
Messi gets the ball and the real players try foul him, but Messi doesn't go down easy, just like jewish chicks. #ElClasico
— Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) January 25, 2012
And another about domestic violence (I can't be subtle about this):
Originally when men proposed they went down on one knee so if the woman said no they were in the perfect uppercut position.
— Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) December 20, 2012
WHAT THE SERIOUS HELL??
This tweet from BuzzFeed's Tom Gara just sums up this situation:
I retweet not in anger. But it's an impressive rise for a dude who three years ago was replying to Uberfacts tweets with dick jokes.
— Tom Gara (@tomgara) March 31, 2015
And here they are:
So I must make my woman fear my penis? RT @UberFacts: The more you fear something, the bigger it appears.
— Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) July 17, 2012
Okay that one is really funny.
While some people have criticized Noah for his dusted-down mini-statements,
Trevor Noah doesn't offend me as a woman, he offends me because he's just not funny. I prefer pretty much anyone else from the DS crew
— helienne (@helienne) March 31, 2015
others have come to his defense.
Given the kind of racist jokes I've had to see and hear over the years that nobody objected I'm not bothered by @Trevornoah jokes
— Andre Forbes (@andref1989) March 31, 2015
Seriously? Already hate for @Trevornoah even though all his tweets were in the context of comedy?
— Ben Ratner (@BenMakesTV) March 31, 2015
Here's the thing from me: He's a comedian. Comedians say raunchy, shocking and controversial things all the time. It's not something to even sneeze at at times.
And if you think that The Daily Show is some high-brow intellectual news program with highly regarded correspondents tackling taboo issues no other programs can't touch that he has no right being even 50 feet near, then...you're right, but up to a point. The Daily Show is an intellectual program, but it's not exactly high-brow (nor is it low-brow; I'm never gonna say that), the correspondents do tackle taboo issues, but they're not exactly the cast of 60 Minutes, and he is a correspondent too.
Here's what you all just can't notice--at the end of the day, The Daily Show is a satirical news program. They make fun of the big news of the day, no matter how painful or serious the story is (except for 9/11 of course). So it can't be a stretch to assume that this show is a high holy grail of television...Except it is when it comedy. And (again) this dude is a comedian! He has made jokes like this before. Even on The Daily Show. And it makes no sense to open your mouths about these tweets when they were posted 3 YEARS AGO!! No one said a damn thing about them then, so why the stupid background check on him now? That's just wrong.
Stop with the damn outrage! What's the point? It's frickin' Comedy Central!! They're known for stuff like this since the day South Park premiered. SOUTH! PARK! I understand some of you don't like him and his humor, but digging old dirt to try to destroy a comedian taking over a comedy show is just deceitful and sad, and just isn't going to work. Trevor Noah is the next host of The Daily Show. Get used to it. Jon Stewart won't stay there forever. If you guys can handle Stephen Colbert ending The Colbert Report, you gotta shape up for the end of an era. This guy is gonna be the next TDS host, and you'll all have nothing to do but fret.
Trevor, from a potentially mixed-race brother to a 100%-sure mixed-race brother, I give you mad respect, and wish you lots of luck later in the year as the new host of The Daily Show.
