Star vs. The Forces of Evil Review: Monster Arm / The Other Exchange Student

Hi, fellow Stargazers!
I hope you’ve enjoyed last week’s Star vs. The Forces of Evil Review. Because there’s gonna be a lot more where that came from. But this week, in this case, I came close from stopping. Why? Well, let’s just say I won’t watch one of the halfers for a long time. And if I do, I will not be happy. This episode started off very good--the plot setup was really good, and the plot itself was very good. I enjoyed the gags, dialogue, jokes and such, and this would would’ve been a very good episode. But then, the scene that ended it all came up...and I ended up very frustrated, very creeped out and very sad. And I don’t plan on watching it very soon.

Here is that episode...

In it, when Marco hurts his arm before a big karate tournament, Star tries to fix it with magic.

One day at the Diaz Family Home, Marco is practicing his Karate skills for a local tournament. He’s hoping to beat Jeremy Birnbaum, a student in his class who is rich, spoiled and entitled. Star comes in and marvels at Marco’s skills. He then places three boards of wood on his cinder blocks and attempts to break them. Unfortunately, when he does so, he breaks his arm.
Later on, with his arm now in a cast, Marco is saddened that he’ll no longer compete in the tournament against Birnbaum. He asks Star (who, of course, is a magical princess from another dimension) to help heal his arm and turn it back to normal. She complies and pulls out a magic spell book from her trunk. In it are spells written in another language. After trying to interpret it, Star tries out the spell on Marco’s injured arm. But he doesn’t get his arm healed. He doesn’t even keep his broken arm. He instead gets an arm shaped like a tentacle.
Marco naturally freaks out.
--You can only imagine what it would feel like to have a monster arm. It would be awesome! ...Well, if you actually wished for one, but then away from those circumstances, that would suck. And another thing, where’s his parents? Oh yeah, they weren’t drawn and voiced for this one, so movin’ on...
The next morning, Marco is suffering the effects of having a monster arm magically attached:
--Having gunk all over your face while in bed
--Having the arm mess with the controls while taking a shower, and
--Throwing your breakfast all over the floor.
Star comes in and tells Marco that she stayed up last night trying to find a reversal spell. Marco doesn’t say a thing, clearly knowing that this will take a while.
--What I love about this scene is that Marco doesn’t react to the arm or anything it does like anyone else would. He just does nothing. Like he’s in for some crap later on. And since he knows someone he’s dealing with at the moment, you can’t blame him. And since it’s so early into the series, that’s impressive.

At school (where everyone just doesn’t notice the arm or ), a bully student, who doesn’t look out of place at a courtroom for steroids charges, bullies a nerd student with a corny (and intentionally stupid, yet unintentionally funny) joke about breakfast. The arm slaps him. When the bully student comes close to pummeling Marco, it slaps him again, sending the bully running away crying. It then picks up the nerd student, wipes away the messy meal from his face and puts him down. The nerd thanks Marco for saving him and gives his honor--only to be knocked away by Ferguson, calling Marco a hero. Everyone cheers, with Marc getting all the ladies marveling at the arm, including his crush Jackie Lynn.
The nerd breathes in exasperation.
--About the nerd breathing thing, I though it felt like a shout-out of something, but it’s a thing that happened.
--Seriously, the joke the bully student said really was funny...somehow.

Later on at Star’s bedroom/expansion pack loft, she and Marco talk about the arm a little more. Then Star reveals a spell that could turn his arm back to normal (Keyword: COULD). With Marco’s genius suggestion, she practices on a plant. It doesn’t work. Marc runs to his room and Star tries again on another plant. It doesn’t work. (--I was getting a major "I Love Lucy" vibe at the end with the "Ewww" squeal, and that was hilarious.)
Throughout the night, Star tries again...and again...and again...and again to find to the correct enunciation of the spell, obviously failing every time. The next morning, Star finally gets it right, growing an arm and reaches success.
--As funny as it was, the arm in the pot looks really creepy. As in something you wouldn’t mind seeing on The Walking Dead or The Munsters or The Addams Family.
When she runs to Marco, who is doing push-ups...with the arm, and tells him about it. Marc changes his mind about it, and wants to use it against Birnbaum at the tournament. When Star says that this would be unfair, Marco calls her out on this, saying that it’s fair for her magic to benefit her, but not if it benefits him, she should leave. He kicks her out and sits on his bed.
The Monster Arm has made its influence on Marco. And it talks to him. It lays out it’s (and now Marco’s) dirty plan:
-Destroy Jeremy Birnbaum,
-Make Jackie Lynn like him,
-and destroy the human race and eat their bowels--I mean, win the tournament.
Marco agrees with all of the plan, giving in to a major dissipation into a certain type of madness under the Monster Arm
--Umm...I can only imagine what eating the part of the human body where poop comes from would be like. Even if it was just a talking squid appendage.

It’s the day of the tournament. Star is seated with Ferguson, Alfonzo along with everyone else, and reveals what she been up to for the past two days. (--Even when she’s worse for wear, Star is still hilarious.) At the first part, we finally meet Jeremy, who is...a child, who could not look more than 8-years-old. (God, Marco’s standards can be very low) When Marco comes out, he begins his match slinging Jeremy around the room like a rag doll. (--Yeeeah. Now I can see why this is airing on Disney XD) It’s at this point where the Monster Arm starts talking again and wants Marc to “FINISH HIM”. Marc replies that he wants to win the tournament just so Jeremy would stop making fun of him. (--Dude...you got problems. At least your parents still love you; that’s what matters) When he refuses, the Arm wants to do it himself. (Jesus, it's like Gravity Falls on sugar) At this point, the Arm finds Marco pathetic and faces him. Marc calls Star to change back his arm, but she has fallen asleep. Fonzy and Fergy try to wake her up by screaming her name, but find a better option in a drink. Ferguson first takes a sip to relieve the stress, but Alfonzo tells him it’s for Star. Ferg then throws the drink at Star, waking her up. She realized the Monster Arm is about to take out her best friend, so she tries the reversal spell, but is repeatedly thwarted by the Arm thanks to its lightning speed, instead laying arm all over the dojo.
--I gotta give it to the Arm for holding it’s own throughout the fight. Nothing could get more.

After the fight, the Arm curses Starco, yells out that it's a part of Marc now and vows to have his revenge before disappearing away, turning back to Marco’s regular human arm. Marc is delighted to have his arm back in it's here-since-birth state. That is until it's back in its broken state. Jeremy is happy that the broken arm forfeit causes his win. But something stops the match from continuing as something falls from his hand--brass knuckles. It’s revealed that Jeremy Birnbaum uses them to help him cheat and win his matches (just like Marco used the Monster Arm to help him cheat and with the match). The Master is disgusted by both boys’ actions and declares them disqualified from the tournament. Jeremy is angry and snaps at his parents, who only try to help cheer him up.
"Kids; you have them, and then you wish they weren't around"
--King Pony Head
Marco apologizes to Star for not taking in her warnings earlier, and asks her what the Monster Arm’s final warning means. Star replies that it's “probably nothing to worry about”. As the episode ends, we treated a flipped-out Marco and his still-broken(until-the-next-episode) arm.

Okay...I’m going to be very honest about this. I will get flack for it, but I don’t care.
I DON’T LIKE THIS EPISODE THIS MUCH. I really don’t.
I get it’s purpose, I get the jokes and plot, and I find most of it really good, but I still don’t like it. And here are my reasons. At first, I thought Marco was going to face a dude his age. And it looks like I (and all the other viewers) would cheer him on, and be happy he’d win. And I’d probably like Jeremy Birnbaum a little, too. But then, come the day of the fight, we learn he’s a child, or as Ferguson puts it “no older than 8”. So, Marco wants to face off against a roughly 8-year-old boy to win a tournament. I’ve seen this plot before, and I have laughed at it when I was a kid, but now I don’t find it that funny, and here it’s taken to extremely creepy levels. Just take away the Monster Arm, and it’s still weird. This is probably the only time I didn’t like Marco as much in an episode, and I hope this is the only one.
And speaking of the Monster Arm, I so get the purpose of it, and I found the “Feast on Their Bowels” joke out-of-nowhere hilarious, but the scene where it swung Jeremy around like a rag doll across the Dojo and threw him through the ceiling was appalling. It would have been different if he was Marco’s age, and I might even laughed at that a bit, but here I just couldn’t. It was just terrifying. I know it’s just what it wants to do, but that makes it even more horrifying.
And let’s talk about Jeremy Birnbaum for a second. I know he’s a spoiled, entitled rich kid, but my God, his behavior is borderline insane. He’s a demon to his parents, he threatened his mom with violence, and he’s an outright jerk to everyone (including his parents). I didn’t find most of his dialogue funny and I would’ve been happy he got taken down a peg by the Arm, had the little scene where it ripped open his Gi, showing his stomach, not been so creepy.
I did find the episode funny up until the moment Little Lord FauntBirnRoy appeared; the moment the Arm appeared, Marco’s first day with it, the joke the bully student made, the moment the Arm began to talk and “Feast on Their Bowels” line are all hilarious moments. But honestly, I can’t stand this episode from that point on, and the next time I watch it, I’ll stop when the karate master says “Jeremy Birnbaum”.

Fortunately, Marco (and I by extension) won’t have much to worry about in the next short

In it, the Diaz family’s charming former exchange student, Gustav, comes to visit and Star is convinced that he has an evil motive for returning.

The episode begins as Star wakes up and goes downstairs, with the Diaz family greeting her with a nice party, celebrating Star’s 47th day on Earth and with the family. Star is delighted. Mr. Diaz gives her a cake to celebrate and Mrs. Diaz writes a poem for her (which Marco clearly doesn’t like). Someone is at the door, which Marco answers. At the door is Gustav, a Scandinavian exchange student whom stayed with the Diazes before Star. Marco is ecstatic to his old Scandinavian pal once again, as they initiate an elaborate handshake. Marco excitedly tells his parents, whom are also ecstatic to see Gustav. Star is confused at this sight and greets Gustav, who introduces himself and informs her that he was the family’s previous exchange student. Star is shocked by this, saying that she thought she was their one and only exchange student. Marco shoots this down as she point to a large group of pictures of other children, which leas Star temporarily puzzled. Gustav gives the family presents: Ms. D. a pair of clogs, Marco a handheld game, and Mr. D. a genuine Viking helmet. The family is ecstatic to reunite with Gustav, and forget about Star, who is now saddened. And...whatever you call this.

--In this part, it is revealed that the Diaz family has hosted many children from different countries. It’s really sweet and heartwarming that this family as a kind, caring and charitable family who will open their home and spend their lives to other children and help take care of them. I already like Marco and his parents, but after this, I’m gonna like them even more.
--At first, I really liked Gustav. He seems like a cool, nice, wonderful kind of guy. And I maybe still like him after this episode.
--Oh and that extended handshake Marco and Gustav do is very cool.
--And I love the reactions Marco and his dad make when they couldn’t wait to receive their gifts. It’s like they couldn’t wait to open their presents on Christmas morning; it’s so funny, yet so adorable.
--Also, the part where Mr. Diaz slams his new-genuine-Viking-helmet-adorned head against a wall came out of nowhere, and was absolutely funny.

Later on, Gustav’s in the kitchen whipping up some meatballs for the Diaz family, which they are excited to eat. Star comes in and is not impressed at the little spherical delights. Gustav then tells the family a story of his days back in Scandinavia: a polar bear cub is stuck on a sinking iceberg, so he comes to the rescue by stripping his sweater and diving in. He save the cute cub by holding it in his mouth and reunites it with its happy and grateful mother. The Diaz fam is flabbergasted and amazed, while Star is still not impressed. Gustav then asks the trio if they want more meatballs, which they’re excited for like fans wanting a foul ball at a Dodgers game. Star is just...creeped out.
--At this point, I noticed something’s going on. At first, I thought those meatballs were used to brainwash the family, and that Gustav was using this to his advantage by making the Diaz trio do his bidding. (And as the episode [and by extension, this review] continues, I was right...sort of)
--Also, at first, I thought that Gustav was saying those fake facts about Scandinavia to make Star believe them, making him think she’s really not from Earth. But then I realized he made them up because he really doesn’t know a lot about Scandinavia. And as we continue, my latter theory makes a lot more sense.

The next morning, Star wakes up and comes down to another surprise party...but it’s not for her. It’s for Gustav, as the Diazes celebrate the second day of his visit with them. Star is even more saddened by this and sits on the couch with a slice of cake. She accidentally knocks over Gustav’s bag and finds some interesting items inside, including the book “Scandinavian for Doofuses”, a language tape called “Customs of Scandinavia” and a map of Europe. Star gets very suspicious, but Gustav stops her from going further, and in an ominous tone, tells her to eat her cake mind her own business. Star tells Marco about Gustav’s stunning secrets, but he doesn’t believe her, saying she’s jealous. She then watches Gustav stuff a slice into Mrs. Diaz’s mouth and creepily look back.
Star has a plan.
--If you didn’t find this face

and this face

creepy, you have no soul...or have watched every other horror film ever.
--Also creepy, this.

Jeez.
Later that night, Star begins her own internal investigation on Gustav, and finds some more interesting tidbits, like him sneaking into a closet with a phone making a call, him in the garage with an axe and giving off a Jason Voorhees vibe, him putting something into his famous meatballs, and him watching the Diaz parents sleep and measures them. All throughout the night, Star pieces the evidence together and works the case until the morning dawn.
--If you haven’t noticed by now, this is the second episode in a row that Star has stayed up through the night to get what she needs to fix a problem. But here, it's for her own gain and she goes mental. And as we continue, it’s best to assume that Star Butterfly is not a person to be around when she doesn’t get her 8 hours and goes Olivia Benson mode. PMS has nothing on her!
--Also, Buff Frog makes a brief cameo in this scene.

I love that, especially part where they look at each other, which should seem to take a hint to Star that this dude keeps spying on her. She sets off some...things.

The next day, Marco is about to tell Star something, but before he does so, She drags him into her and talks about Gustav’s secret life, like she’s off the deep end (but don’t worry; she has). She believes that Gustav is using his residency with the Diazes to commit murder and eat the family. Marco says she’s lost her mind, and informs her that Gustav is meeting him and his parents at Isolation Point…”where no one can hear you scream...of excitement”. He leaves, and she’s scared for them. Star imagines the past few days of nothing but Gustav, his secrets, the Daizes’ love for him, his plan to fatten them up, her “jealousy” and meatballs. At the end, she freaks out and runs after them. No, not run--blast; more like Bunny Rabbit Blast.

She reaches the family van and lands on the roof (with a rainbow belt for safety first), and tries to warn the family about Gustav’s true intentions, but they can’t hear her, as they’re too busy singing their excitement.
The family and Star finally reach Isolation Point; but first Star turns a sign around to divert the Diaz trio from the real directions, and she runs to where Gustav is waiting.
--This line "WHAT THE HECK IS A POLAR BEAR?!?!” was hilarious, and it works because Star isn’t from Earth, so she doesn’t much of anything, like the water fountain, or exact food or School Spirit--and you get the point.
--Also, I love that there’s a brief appearance of Princess Pony Head here. I don’t know why she’s there, since it doesn’t seem to fit with the investigation. But I don’t care; I loved it and I still miss her.
--And, of course, the “no one can hear you scream” line is from Alien.

Star finds Gustav ready for his “plan”, axe out and shining. She jumps out and confronts him, but he bolts, with Star going after Gustav. They both reach a bridge, but Gustav cuts it loose. Too bad he doesn’t know about her magic wand and her magic, which she uses to amazing effect. Here, she summons a flying, fire-breathing dragon and still gives chase. He finally gives up and faces Star. Star finally makes Gustav reveal himself, and although he doesn’t want to eat the Diaz family, he’s not really a Scandinavian named Gustav.
His real name is Charlie Booth, and is from called Bakersfield...ville, a boring city that no one has heard of, where all citizens (human and animal) live dreary, depressing lives. Since he couldn’t take all of this anymore, Charlie runs away and assumes a new identity as a Scandinavian exchange student living with the Diazes. Under this long-term plan, he hopes to start a business as a chef and own a restaurant in Bakersfieldville and make all the citizens happy. As for the phone call, he was just calling his meat supplier for more, but his cell signal is weak, so he went to ; and as for the axe, he was using it to chop firewood for the picnic. (No word about why he was measuring the Diaz parents, or the creepy leers as those were used to trail us off.) Star now has the ammo to blow the whistle to the family, but when they finally make it to Isolation Point, she decides not to tell and lie that Gustav has made more meatballs. Gustav thanks Star for not blowing his cover and returns the favor by letting her do whatever she wishes. Star gladly complies...and that favor is kicking Gustav out of the Diaz home and, along with the family. wishes him goodbye.
The episode ends with another family meeting with someone at their door.

It’s Charlie, whom has assumed another identity as a Frenchman name Francois. The family is happy to Franc and celebrate his return. They go inside, but Charlie peeks out and looks around, then goes inside.
(Could this be the end of Charlie Booth? Well, according to the Wiki, nope, not really. At least it seems so, as he is listed, under his identity as Gustav, as a main character. I don't know why, as he felt like a one-shot character to me. Oh well. Stay tuned.)
--Here’s a bit of irony: a guy who wants to be a chef is from Bakersfield...ville.
--Second, how awesome was it to see Star use her wand correctly by reaching up the Diaz family van, making the dragon and all the detective work. All it took was for her to turn Norman Bates psycho and lose almost all control and boom, instant magic expert. Good work, Star.

So yeah, this was the better halfer for the week. The story was interesting and perfect and the execution was magnifique. All the characters had funny, endearing, and/or engaging dialogue; the gags were on the same level with those I loved with Monster Arm; and Star showed why she showed love and care for her second family. In fact, almost immediately. I actually thought she had genuine concern and love for the Diazes a little too early. Usually, in a TV show, a relationship grows and then reaches the part of genuine concern and worry, and that takes to at least the middle or end of a season for this to reach its apex. Here, this feels a little rushed. But it does work, because of Star’s sweet, kind, warm heart, increasing responsibility and confidence, and repertoire for learning her mistakes and building from them, it’s clear that wants to help her new family any way she can; and this is absolutely it, even if it’s still early in the show.

Another thing about this episode, even though Star clearly loves and cares about the Diaz family, it’s very clear she’s jealous about Gustav and just did her investigation and confronting him because she wants the family to herself, being the only exchange student in their lives. On the other hand, Gustav kinda did take them away and used them for his own gain (start up his chef career and open a restaurant) along with being a jerk to Star, so this does even out and might even favor slightly in Star’s case. So yeah, this may have some negative traits about Star, but (again) this was still the better episode overall. It’s slightly more positive than Monster Arm.

Well, Stargazers, another review in the books. Thanks again for joining me and reliving another very solid episode. Once again, I thank the Star vs. Forces of Evil page on Wikia for giving me all the help and information on this and the other reviews. Couldn’t have done it without you.
See you next week when I review
-“Cheer Up Star”, which I assume is about how much Heck will be risen when Star isn’t her cheery, enthusiastic self, and
-”Quest Buy”, which may or may not be a physical or online rip-off of BEST Buy. ...or some new addicting game about buying colorful armor and weapons for a quest to credit card debt.
See you then! Until next week, I’m Andrew saying
Reach for the Star and Keep Looking Up! ...at your TV screen.

Funday Friday: #16--A Match Made in Fast-Food Heaven

Welcome to another Funday Friday, everybody.
Love can come in many places, but what if I told you that it came in the form of surnames formed to make the name of a popular fast-food chain?

Joel and Ashley, from New Berlin, IL, are grade school sweethearts. Since the fifth grade, the two have been inseparable.
So, when they announced their engagement on Instagram earlier this Spring, the Internet buzzed with excitement and glee. Not just because of the beginning of the road to marriage, but also because of their unique surnames: Burger (Joel) and King (Ashley). Even better when put together--Burger-King. They decided to flip the name because of the namesake resemblance (usually the woman's name goes first, but the switch is way cooler.)
Since then everyone's been talking about it, including the Burger King company itself. When execs read of the upcoming nuptials, they decided to take care of the payments for the wedding themselves (tux and dress, catering [mostly burgers and fries no doubt], attendees, the works)

Their story first appeared in the State-Journal Register newspaper in Springfield, and has been very well-received by many denizens in the local area. So much so, it (again) went viral.

Here is video from the newspaper's website where the happy couple learn of the company's huge contribution to their wedding. It's so sweet.
I honestly can't wait to see when the wedding comes in, and to see the smiling coupe become one. Congrats to happy Mr. & Mrs. Burger-King.

But more importantly, I can't wait to see Burger King turn this into some sweet and/or funny ad for the company on many streaming websites (like YouTube before the Skip Ad option comes in.)

Caught on Video: SC Police Officer Kills Black Man; Lies About Man Being Armed

Yesterday, I was watching the CBS Evening News before urging to change the channel; but then I heard Scott Pelley saying the words "police officer", "black man" and "shot to death". I got very perturbed and held the dial where it was. In the report, a video was shown of a white police officer shooting a black man to death in a park in North Charleston, South Carolina. The guy was running, seemingly because the officer was about to attack. The officer then shot him to death, and the sound-byte ends.
The officer was later arrested and charged with a murder charge. I changed the channel and went on with the rest of my day. Yet I was left with a bad taste in my mouth.

The guy, 50-year-old Walter Scott, was stopped by a traffic cop, for a broken tail-light. After a talk, there was a chase on foot, because of family court-issued warrants issued for his arrest, which led into a grassy lot. Form there, the officer catches the guy by shooting him in the back. Another officer comes by and takes in a wounding kit. The two officers come to Scott and take care of his wounds.

Here's where it goes for the worse: Minutes later, on CB radio, the officer lied to the other officers, saying that the guy had taken his Taser and tried to use it against him. If that actually happened (the guy taking the Taser and using it against the officer), then I would've understood the attack and would've even praised the officer for keeping his distance and defended himself. But NO! That did happen. The man fucking lied under oath, and took the life of a man who wasn't fucking armed!
I was disgusted and annoyed that these attacks and shooting deaths by police just keep happening, even if the guy did have a weapon. But here there was no weapon. The guy was unarmed. So the police officer shoots a guy for no damn reason. And, to top it off, instead of treating Scott with first aid, the officer runs off to the Taser on the ground and goes back to the dying suspect, dropping it in front of him, as if he's covering the crime scene. After the fix-up, the video ends.

Here is the video courtesy of the New York Times website (WARNING: it's graphic)

And Here is video of a press conference by featuring Scott's family and their attorney L. Chris Stewart, courtesy of the Huffington Post:

Imagine if this wasn't caught on video. This man still would've been walking, and still would've been a police officer, and this unarmed guy still would have been gone, leaving a poor, heartbroken, forever-saddened family behind. I hope the family stays strong in this horrible, painful, irreversible situation in their lives. I send my condolences to the Scott family.

I'll leave this post with this comment I made under a post a friend of mine shared on Facebook:
This is a fucking shame. Even if he wasn't a model citizen, he DID have a family and was a former man of authority. And now this so-called fellow man of authority took his life, because the guy was black. Fuck "Oh, he took my Taser" or "oh, he was armed". He fucking LIED on radio. I don't know how anyone could defend this officer now that he was caught killing a man for no reason.
I hope he has his badge taken away. Fuck this man.

SNL 40 Review: Michael Keaton & Carly Rae Jepsen

Guys...they've done it again! The writers have managed to make it two good episodes in a row!! And this one was really good. All it needs as the cherry on the Sundae (heh, pun. See, it's a pun because it airs on Sundays for the last 60 minutes of airtime. It's really geni--never mind)--anyway, what was the icing on the cake is Michael Keaton as host.

This week's host has been flying over the stratosphere now, but previously in the 80s and 90s, he was a white-hot commodity. With such films as Jack Frost, Mr. Mom, Beatlejuice, Night Shift, Jackie Brown and of course the Batman films with him in the Bat-suit as The Dark Knight.
But then, after keeping his career heating up for over three decades, he hit acting gold when he starred in last year's critically-acclaimed, Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning film Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). After this, everyone wants him in their films, and he couldn't be any bigger of an actor. So, of course he's hosting Episode 17 of SNL 40. And I have my review here. Let's go!

The CO is a broadcast of the Road to the NCAA Final Four on CBS. Ernie Johnson (Beck Benn), Kenny Smith (Jay Pharoah) and Charles Barkley (Kenan Thompson) discuss an announcement from Duke coach Mike Krzyewski.

Jaleel Okafor is out of the game to study for a major test so he has a replacement: 36-year-old grad student Steve (Bobby Moynihan).
Kenan returns to form as Barkley, Beck Benn and Pharoah are also great as (respectively) Johnson and Smith, and TKillalso got laughs as Duke coach Krzyewski. along with Moyni as Steve. I did feel the applause "Steve" gotten was pretentious, but it did serve its purpose. Also, some of the questions asked by the reporters about Okafor leaving the game for a test were stupid, even though this is a parody. I didn't know why, but that did serve its purpose too. All-in-all, a very good Cold Open.

After the open, Michael comes to the stage for his third Monologue.
He mentions after the first time he hosted in 1982, that he had a baby (who's now 31) and a new girlfriend (who may or may not be 28). And in come Usual Guy #1 and Usual Guy #2--I mean Moyni and TKill. (I could've sworn this was a parody of the many times they're appeared in sketches more than everyone else, but no this is legit.) They yuk it up to Michael's jokes and pretty much kiss his ass. (You can tell it in their fake smiles and many looks into the camera.) The reason for this: they segue into a song number about their asking him to be Batman and Beatlejuice in a sketch with them, and the reasons why (TKill's "birthday" & Moyni having an fatal illness with only six weeks to live). They have Pharoah dress up in costumes and do impressions related to this, and dog him on about it.
Then they have a special clip with them as (respectively) The Penguin and The Joker/Man & Woman (with Michael being edited in as Batman & Beatlejuice)
I'm sorry, I don't know why I'm acting this way about them. They're funny and talented, and this Mono was really funny, especially the tribute clip. I think this redeemed them more for me. Also, how quick was Pharoah getting dressed as Harry Belafonte after being dressed as Bat-Ass?? I know they do a quick run to wardrobe to dress up for the next sketch, but damn, that was fast.
So overall, fantastic Mono.

Next up, a spoof on CNN's over-reliance of 3D graphics in its news reports, in the place of its' weekday rolling news program Newsroom. Brooke Baldwin (Cecily Strong) anchors the stories of the day, including last week's Germanwings Airliner Incident in the French Alps, with a report from Jacqueline Jackson (Sasheer Zamata). Also, Jake McKinsey (Moyni) reported from Switzerland where the US and Iran negotiated on a deal on Nuclear Weapons. And finally a report on Indiana's controversial Freedom of Religion Laws. It's what you'd come to expect if you hate CNN. And if you love CNN, you gotta admit--it's funny.

This was funny as f**k.
-The graphics used in the Germanwings story were a hilarious mocking of those used by CNN, which look like something made in the 80s. In fact this was mentiontioned here as "made by the same team who did the Dire Straits' 'Money for Nothing' music video from 1985".
-The puppet troupe reenactment looks like something out of Sesame Street, but fact this made it funnier.
-The dance troupe is my favorite part and a great dramatization of the Freedom for Religion laws controversy in Indiana. Michael Keaton, Kenan and Aidy dancing made the last part for me.
-And this too...

This is one of the best skits of the ep for me.

Ad Agency
At Wallace Advertising, CEO Mr. Wallace joins his staff (CecStrong, Kenan, LesDogg and Beck Benn) for a transforming session and things go from good to worse.

The work on this one project was meh for, but the knockers part and the "grandma-face-on-grill" part was chuckle-worthy. Also, there wasn't much to know about the injury Wallace suffered. There were some laughs here, but the sketch was weak, and should be one of the worst sketches for me.

An old Southern couple are having neighbors over, so they discuss a new beginning for their house. It's a Smart House which brings all the latest technologies to you in the comfort of your home. But to the neighbors, there's a discomfort.

God, this skit was creepy. Some parts were funny, but I couldn't stop cringing like the neighbors were here. And how the couple said their dialogue made things worse. It's like the House has taken over them and is in the progress of continuing. I don't think this is one of the best. But it did do its job of creeping the audience, the viewers and the neighbors.

An Easter Message
Michael takes the time to talk to viewers about Easter and one of the joyous parts of it: Candy and Easter Baskets.

Boy, he looked extremely effeminate here. And that face.

Brr...
But he was a riot, and the puns on the Basket items were cringingly hilarious, especially the one on the Friday DVD. Kate Mc was also hilarious as doe-eyed dingbat Portia. To me, she's more than "kind of" cute. She's...uh...super cute. (I couldn't find a word to describe "more than above average", so that'll do.) Along with Moyni as the nut Jordan, this sketch was weird, explicit, and downright cringe-worthy. But it was extremely funny, and definitely one of my favorites of the episode.

Carly Rae Jepsen is this week's musical guest.
And yet, she had another hit after "Call Me Maybe". It's not that I hate her; it's that I expected her to be a One-Hit Wonder That Would Get Another Hit after that big-ass popularity explosion the song got after it was released. So she's here with another hit single in "I Really Like You". That's mostly thanks to the music video with Tom Hanks. But thanks to her debut appearance here, that song just may be more popular. And you know what? I really, really, really, really, really, really like it.

It's fun, jumpy, catchy and destined to be a big hit for the summer. It may very well be just like "Call Me Maybe" in the vein of puppy love/huge teen crush songs that somehow caught wind of the public conscience, but it's kinda fresh and very catchy, plus it has a really nice 80s Pop vibe to it that is just infectious, and I wouldn't mind listening to it every time it plays on the radio or when I play it on YouTube.
-

If you expected the next (and final) song to be her personal tribute to the Nickelodeon sketch comedy series from the 90s and early 2000s, than you'd be seriously disappointed.
"All That" is about someone proving to their lover that they're worth being in love with. This track is a very soulful, sultry ditty that no teenage singer would ever sing (unless they've reinvented themselves by singing it and failed). Jepsen really proves she has the range with the lyrics provided and has the just enough sex-appeal (without showing so much like everyone else) to make it hot. I really like this song as well, and would love to hear it if it ever plays on the radio or if I play it on YouTube.

Did I mention she's nearly 30? Yeah, God really made it good on her looks, as if she still looks like a freaking teenager, and it shows. You really can't blame me (or anyone else) for repeatedly thinking she's that young, even after knowing she's "parent-with-kids" age.

Jepsen's vocals here were really good. They feel raw, raspy and weak, but in a good way. Plus her vocals and lyrics work very well in a throwback-genre song than in a straight-up pop song. retro vibe meshes so well with Carly's vocals that you'd think she really was a pop artist from the 80s. I'm seriously interested in listening to more of her latest album, and maybe a lot more from Ms. Jepsen.

Time for an Update:
Part 1:

Part 2:

It got better. It really got better. Weekend Update has gotten better. The jokes are more polished, they're more edgy and biting, and, most of all, they're funny. Jost & Che are much more comfortable and inclined at the desk and I'm actually enjoying them a lot more. Colin is less boring and droll and more relaxed and open, and Michael is less irritable and messy and more smooth and . I really can't be any more surprised at the fact that I'm actually happy that Jost got to stay with Update and that Che replaced Cecily Strong.
(although there will be a few more times where I will say, had he appears again, "Riblet should replace one of them")
It's taken nearly all of this season, but Update has found a beat in these two guys and I hope this continues into the final stretch of the season, and I really hope that they come back next season with the same energy, same bite and same humor as before.

Resident young person Pete Davidson returned to discuss the fifth season finale of The Walking Dead, with a new fear of a Zombie apocalypse. With a few slip-ups about weed. Meh.

His appearance and performance never fails to be funny (Except that one time when he did). But his report on TWD's finale was very funny. I don't watch the show, but I felt like I've known enough of it to find it so. And Norman Reedus' cameo appearance was just the icing on the cake. The appearance as his character was also very funny. Very good so far.

JEBIDIAH ATKINSON IS BACK!!
The reviewer of everything shown in a machine from the 1860s is back for another round of brutal, biting, vicious material about some of your favorite TV shows, movies and music. And I couldn't be any more happier! This time, it's Mad Men, Game of Thrones and House of Cards.

I thought the jokes from his "archives" were a few "biting-the-hand" jokes at NBC. Which would've been fine, as I'm sure Robert Greenblatt would've loved them (as he wasn't at the network to oversee them back in the 80s and 90s), and the Presidents of Entertainment wouldn't care enough to be offended.

Top Three Best Sketches:

Worst Sketches:
(this time, the worst sketches chosen here weren't because they were horrible; it's that they had a potential to be good or even great, but didn't rise up)
Smart House (it was more creepy than funny)
Ad Agency (it wasn't funny enough)
--
I must say...this episode is f**king awesome. And it will be a serious contender for the best episode of the entire season. Yes, I think it's that good, and can you blame me. The writers rebounded hard, and everyone put in seriously great performances. And for once, I really didn't mind The Two Usual Guys appearing in almost every other sketch, because they were super funny in all of them.
In fact everyone did a great job in the sketches they were in, especially Kate Mc (including the hilariously eccentric "Easter Message" sketch). I commend everyone for their consistent appearances in the sketches.

Keaton was superb in his guest host role. All the sketches he appeared in showed off a different side to him
(--A damn good dancer
--A Ad Agency CEO with the mind of Jhonen Vasquez
--A old man with a hankering for people-scarring science
--A creepy joker about Easter Baskets and Candy )
and he does them so freaking well. It's like watching a group of different guys doing these roles yet act like the same person on the surface. Keaton definitely has the chops to become one of the best host this season (maybe even a long time). I just wonder why he doesn't do this show more.

The writers really woke up during the hiatus and realized those two episodes after the 40th Anniversary Special were mediocre trite. These episodes have really taken this season from borderline unwatchable and put it into middle-of-the-road with a fighting chance of being at least good. And I can't wait to see what the next episode. And speaking of the next episode...

Next week, star of the silver and small screens, and breakout of both "Person of Interest" and this season's runaway monster hit "Empire", Taraji P. Henson will be host of Episode 18, with music from Mumford & Sons. Both will be making their debut appearance on SNL, and I'm eager for what happens then. I hope this lucky streak continues.
See you then!!

EDREWtorial: Indiana's Freedom of Religion Law--IT SUCKS!

I don't like Indiana Senate Bill 101 AKA the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
It's a law that "allows individuals and companies to assert that their exercise of religion has been, or is likely to be, substantially burdened as a defense in legal proceedings". But what the eyes of many people see it as a law brutally against the existence of the people of the LBGT community. This law is horrible. And everyone who isn't a religion nut or republican (including me) knows it's horrible.

What has homosexuality ever done to religion? I understand that marriage is usually between a man and woman, and you can't stand two people of the same gender doing things as public displays of affection (I'm with you on that one; I can't frickin' stand that myself), holding hands, spooning, or, God forbid, sex.

But here's the thing: this has nothing to do with sex. This law is forbidding gays, transsexuals, bisexuals and others from going to department stores and buying something. How can you tell who's gay and who isn't? Just because of their voice? Because of the clothes they wear? That ain't good enough. Non-straight people shouldn't be exempt from going to their favorite store or restaurant because of the sexual orientation. And speaking of straight people, I just thought of this: If a person comes to a store or restaurant, do they have to show proof that they're straight and only straight? Because that's a fucked-up way of morals.

I hope a repeal comes soon. It's extremely unfair and unjustly superfluous for same-sex people to live their lives and going to buy clothes or food or basic necessities while being brutally watched over and treated in a horribly condescending way. Just because they love someone in the same race, that doesn't mean it should define everything about them. A human is more than just sexual orientation or religion. It's also about what they contribute to the world or how they see the world.

I can only be curious as to what happens had this thing goes official: Fat people are exempt from a fast food restaurant because Gluttony is a deadly sin? Blondes can't go to department stores because Lust and Envy are big no-no's? Politicians are not allowed in office because lying, stealing and adultery break the Ten Commandments? Who knows??

Funday Friday: #15--"The Real" Honors Selena

Happy Funday Friday, everyone.

On a bittersweet note here, 20 years ago on March 31, 1995, the world lost a huge talent in the world of Tejano and popular music. Her name was Selena Quintanilla-Perez, also known as Selena. Her shocking, tragic and untimely death at the young age of 24 still rocks the world and breaks the harts of her many fans.

On the day of the passing, daytime talk show The Real dedicated a show to her, her music, and her legacy. Her sister Suzette Quintanilla appeared to talk about her music and legacy and what it meant to her family now as it did back then. She also discusses how her music and career has stood strong and inspired generations after her passing.

At the end of the episode, co-host Adrienne Bailon, who is a wonderful performer herself (she was a member of 3LW and The Cheetah Gils), performed one of Selena's iconic songs "I Could Fall in Love". She does a really beautiful rendition. It made me tear up.

And as a bonus, here is a 2007 making-of feature of Selena that takes place 10 Years after biopic film was released in 1997.
Part 1:

Part 2 (39-second finale):

Thank you to the co-hosts and producers of The Real for honoring Selena and helping keep her legacy alive. I also will praise her fans all around the world for keeping her music and memory alive. You all are amazing people. As a fan of the biopic (a absolutely wonderful film), I can't be any more grateful for all of you.

We love you Selena. Rest in Peace.

Star vs. The Forces of Evil Review: Match Maker / School Spirit

Hello fellow Stargazers. Welcome back to my review of Star vs. The Forces of Evil.
I hope you enjoyed the last review because from this point on, there will be more where that come from. Let’s get started with...

The episode begins at Echo Creek Academy. Star and Marco are walking down the hallway, with her being greeted by fellow students. Star is delighted in her being friends with many other students, finding herself cool. Marco disagrees and points to who he finds cool, his friends Alfonzo and Ferguson. They attempt to pick up chicks and fail, with Ferguson using a drawing on his stomach to do such. Star suggests matching Ferg with a girl, while Marco just says No.
--I’m just gonna put this out there: I really like Alfonzo and Ferguson.
--It’s nice to see the other students being nice and friendly to Star, as if her magic powers don’t mean a thing to them or see her as a freak. I guess this series is going in a good direction.
--About Alfonzo and Ferguson. They’re the kind of friends you really should have; they’re not snotty or jerks and they’ll always be there for you no matter what. Sure, they’re not very attractive, but they make up for it in humor, loyalty. And I definitely would find them cool any day.
--Also, if you’ve seen “Monster Arm” first before this episode (and I hope you didn't because it’s important...and you would’ve ended up confused), you wouldn’t have known the names of Marco’s friends, Alfonzo and Ferguson. Or have known they were Marco’s friends. Just people they know. Thank Goodness that it didn’t screw up anything or confuse people. Heh heh heh.

Heh.

In class, they receive the results of tests they originally taken from Ms. Skullnick. Star gets an F- (“for Fantastic”, as she claims), but Marco assures her it’s for Fail. Marc, meanwhile, gets an A+ (along with a smiley face). Star wants a grade like that, so she decides to take her “matchmaking skills” to Ms. Skullnick, who laments the last time she had a date (he had a boat, but left her at the dock; hmm, sounds like a good lyric for a rap song) and Star uses this to make a deal: If she can help Ms. Skullnick land the perfect date, Skullnick will give Star the perfect grade,, by using her magic to match her up. Unfortunately, because of the obvious and Ms. Skullnick telling her not to, she instead turns her into a troll (with a suspiciously-shaped and -placed thing on her belly button). Star and Marc are shocked, and Skullnick freaks out, while the other students are ecstatic at their teacher being turned into a troll. Marco tells Star to revert Skullnick back to her human self, and she complies, but that spell actually takes Starco and Skullnick to Star’s expansion pack bedroom at the Diaz Family Home.
--That spell can be very useful later on.
--Also, I didn't notice this the first time (although I did notice his hand covering it later), but after reading some comments on the the Wikia site, it is revealed on his test that Marco has a middle name of Waldo. I think that's a really cool middle name (not because I'm a Meatball, but because it just sounds great with the rest of his name. At least that's how I see in comparison to my middle name. Which is Duvall. Yeah, I don't mind it; it's just I don't care for it that much.

Meanwhile someone is peeping in at this excursion (again). It’s Buff Frog, who takes his reportings and heads over to Ludo’s Castle, revealing to him that Star has been distracted from her wand and is open for attack. Ludo is overjoyed at this news and thinks of what he would do had he have the wand: He make it match his skeleton hat, get super buff he’d destroy the kingdom, and become a lifeguard. He laughs in delight of this, and when a henchman asks if he’s doing CPR, Ludy coldly silences him...and agrees.
--I’m gonna be honest here: I was thinking about Ludo with those large muscles. It's really nice to see. I really wouldn’t mind seeing that in fanfiction art. I better get started on that!
--While Ludo was talking about Star is distracted, I couldn't help but think that he himself was a little distracted. Probably that’s the point, cause if so, that’s hilarious.
--Also, the ice cream part is both creepy and hilarious. That teensy part with one of his henchman picking up the glob and putting it back on the cone without Ludo noticing is hilarious.

Back at the house, Marco and Star are trying their best to stop Skulltroll from crying, which has flooded her room. Marc suggests Star calls her mom The Queen for help, which she doesn’t want to do, as doing such will send her to St. Olga’s Reform School for Wayward Princesses, where she believes the students will be cut open and will never be the same. And she screams.
Marco suggests beating around the bush--telling her everything with being specific. Star goes to her Talking Mirror and has it call Mom; instead it calls Tom, who happens to be her ex-boyfriend. Tom wants to talk with Star, but she clearly ignores him and hangs up. She does get to her mom, and beats around, but the Queen clearly looks like she knows something’s up. Star tries to assure her that’s not the case, but Skulltroll finally escapes through the window.
--At the Wikia site, there’s a still of Starco visiting Tom in his fiery world. I assume he’ll appear more in an upcoming episode. And I hope he does; he seems so cool and nice, but he probably has a temper that you seriously can’t mess with. Also, he’s voiced by Rider Strong. Yep. Shawn freaking Hunter is the voice of Tom. It can’t get any cooler than that. Also, that teensy part where Tom raises...fire a half-second before Star hangs him up is funny and chilling at the same time.
--Seriously, does anyone notice the gem in Skullnick’s stomach? I mean you should have; it’s been four days after the episode (as of posting this).

Ms. Skulltroll tries to run away, but is tackled by Marco. Star jumps in to congratulate him, and is mocked by Ludo, who suddenly appears with his henchmen to attack Starco and swipe her wand. But first, a gag in which Star and Ludo go Crossfire about Star’s procrastination.

And now, it’s on! Starco vs. The Useless Minions--The Fight for the Magic Wand: Round 2.
--I don’t wanna get too specific, but this match was just as awesome as the first one back in “Star Comes to Earth”, if not more. Seeing two tennagers hold their own against a bunch of grown male monsters (with magic AND karate, mind you) is just majestic.

Emmitt (a minion who happens to have a name) lands in front of Miss Skulltroll, and the two gaze into their eyes (very longingly), and begin to fall in love. When Star notices this, she lets Marco take it solo (you know this won’t end up good), and foes to the two lovebirds (or love) and does her best to link them up.
--Okay. I admit. The part of the scene where Marc gets beat up by Ludo’s minions was hilarious. Especially when he got thrown to the ground.by Emmitt. Even the one when Emmitt slowly pulls out his sword, this close from being about to finish him. (I GUESS THERE’S A LIMIT.)

When Star finishes her job as temporary Patti Stanger (if you don’t know who that is, good, you’re better at life than I am), she stops the temporary beatdown and puts on what has to be her finishing move now. (Even Marco realizes it), Turbo Nuclear Butterfly Blast. Of course, Starco wins again and they and, Ludo, leave again like they just lost the Super Bowl.
--Seriously, I think there may be a running gag coming ahead with TNBB being used to end a Ludo fight. And I do hope this is lampshaded more because this is funny.

When all is good in the Creek, Star find Miss Skulltroll and Emmitt an item (to Marc’s disgust), and happily asks her if she finally has an A. Skulltroll say she does...if she was still a teacher. She announces to the kids that she putting teaching behind to be with Emmitt; Star is saddened that she has still failed her test, with Marco

The next day at the Academy, Star recaps all that happened to her and Marco’s fellow classmates. When they hear that she is out of Earth, they immediately run to her desk and congratulate, throwing Marco out of the way. Star then decides to Marco the credit for the adventure. This impresses all the students, including Jackie Lynn, who congrats a blushing Marco for his . Suddenly, Miss Skullnick returns through a portal and onto her desk. She reveals to her students (especially Star) that Emmitt broke with her (saying she assumed this because he couldn't understand what the heck he’s saying) and ends up broken hearted again. In consolation, she gives her students the worst pop quiz in their lives. Everyone goes back to their seats, and Marco’s seat is kicked back to where he usually is. Star apologizes to him for the embarrassment, but he's cool with it as the girl of his dreams just talked to him. Star is delighted that her matchmaking skills have worked more than her magic, and as what she done to Marc's face (turning it to a butterfly) is any indication, she's right.

Remember the students and teacher from Star Comes to Earth? The people who didn’t give a crud about Marco at that part? Well, this episode fully introduces them further and expands on their characters more. The buff blond boy in the orange shirt is the guy that cheers on Star twice, the girl in the blond hair with the blue streak is Jackie Lynn, Marco’s crush, and the cranky old teacher in the tacky outfit is Miss Skullnick, who is now known as someone who can’t keep a man...and is still cranky.
Oh and by the way, that form Miss Skullnick appears as? Yep, that’s the way she appear as from now on. From this episode on, she stay a troll forevermore. (Crud, it creeps me out.)

Oh and Jackie Lynn reminds me of someone similar: Jacqueline Voorhees from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Well, when she originally was a Native American teenager named Jackie...Lynn. They even look alike.

You know, as cranky and old-lady-ish as she is, you really can’t help but feel sorry for Miss Skullnick throughout the episode. Then when Star paired up with Emmitt, I got very happy for her, as now she has someone to settle down with, even though this was because of Star doing this to get a better grade. Then when she was dumped yet again, I couldn’t feel any more sorry for her.

Now that the painful day the students went through has gone out of the way, it time they cheer up with the next episode...

In it, Star, still unfamiliar with the lingo on Earth, misunderstands when she hears that the Echo Creek football team is going to “get slaughtered” and prepares a series of booby traps to protect them.

This episode, like the last, begins at ECA, where students and faculty are enjoying the pep tally for their school’s football team the Awesome Opossums’ upcoming game against their rivals, the Silver Hill Prep Warriors. Star and Alfonzo are eager to volley a ball, while Marco sits bored.
Principal Skeeves introduces the cheerleaders, including head cheerleader Brittney Wong, “who became head cheerleader on her own, and not because her dad made a generous donation to the school”. (Riiiight) The cheerleaders come in and gets the crowd fired up about the team (and gets Star burning like an inferno). Star thinks Brittney’s talking about the animal (which really is kinda cute how they hold their babies on their backs), but Marco assures her it’s the football team. When he tells her about the game and that the rivals about to “slaughter” them, she takes this to heart that the rivals are going to kill them (seriously, she has a lot to learn here), and runs home for supplies, beginning preparation for what will be known as a crazy night ahead. Brittney introduces their new mascot, the Awesome Opossum.
Marco realizes that the real Opossum, a real possum, is gone, and assumes the Warriors stole it. Alfonzo assures him that’s not the case, as the possum “wasn’t playing possum”.

(It died.)
The two later notice it’s Ferguson in the costume, as he’s the new mascot.Marco then realizes that the Warriors would steal him later on, but Alfonzo rebuss that.

--Can I say how awesome the Spirit Committee is? Their school cheer “Go Echo Creek! Let’s try not to get beat!” is both fun and funny. And the :”relentless” support for the team is unwavering. And should be, too, Since the Awesome Opossums are facing the Warriors later on. “It’s gonna be a bloodbath”, indeed.
--Also, Miss Skullnick eating those chicken wings like a savage is also funny.
--Another funny thing (in a sad way) is the quick shot of the funeral of the Awesome Opossum. The sad background music and the tiny feet standing up just make it for me.
--One last thing, I realized something about Alfonzo. He's like a human version of Animal from The Muppets. . The only difference here between them is that Fonzy speaks complete sentences, and that he doesn't seem to play drums. That's one thing out of a lot that I like about him.

Star is running through the hallway, when she stops and looks at the trophy case, where portraits of the players reside. She tears up and gives her respects to them before making an air drawing of a frowny face. Meanwhile, Marco is sneaking through the halls, on a mission to protect Mascot Ferguson from the Warriors. That is until he meets Star at the trophy case.
When Star asks him for advice on preventing another loss (to him--losing a game; to her, losing a life) for the team (It’s like he’s asking for her to destroy to Warriors), he suggests the element of surprise...and bombs. When Star has the advice she need, Marc finds the perimeter clear and call Alfonzo to take Fergy into safety, something the latter isn’t fond of, because of the potential disrespect.
--Here, I just loved how caring Marco is toward Ferguson as a friend in this situation, seeing as he doesn’t want Fergy to be stolen by the Warriors during the game. It really shows how Marco “puts friends first”.
--On the other hand, Really, Marco? Do you realize what Star is going to do now?
I mean, he really should know what he’s dealing with here. Either he wants Star to commit homicide on a rival football team (knowing that she knows NOTHING about American anything) to let his precious team win a friggin’ game or just doesn’t notice that fact the STAR BUTTERFLY is going to potentially commit homicide to keep their team, just not realizing that no one’s going to die in high school football! (sure, there will be injuries and concussions, but not death) He should know better than this. He got a friggin’ A-plus in the last episode. Where’s Waldo? Looking for his common sense.
(I’m sorry; I know it’s just a cartoon and that sometimes ignorance is bliss for a good laugh, but jeez.)

At the auditorium, the Spirit Committee are practicing for the game. Brittney signals Sabrina to do a flip and jump with the assurance that the Boys will catch her. Star comes in, distracting the boys and ruining the catch for Sabrina. She looks at the the accessories for bombs. And when she begins to make one with her magic, Brittney stops her and demands to know why she’s there. Star, still thinking the game is a battle to the death, asks Brittney “the plaaaan” to beat them. Brittney tells her they have the “secret weapon”...their booties. They’re gonna shake their butts in the direction of the other team to distract them from the game. Star tells them it’s not gonna work in combat (more explicitly Shantelle’s booty-shaking), and tells them she knows everything from her babysitters, The Royal Guards.
Brittney offends Star by calling her stupid and bans her from the Spirit Committee. Star then decides to carry the deed by herself...and is megaphone-d out of the room by Brittney.

--The part where Star tells the cheerleaders that Shantelle’s booty shaking wouldn’t work was hilarious, but the reaction from Shantelle herself had me dying (No pun intended. Seriously.)

--And if you didn’t find little Star extremely cute...you have no soul. None whatsoever.
--If I were Star, and Brittney offended me or Mewni, I’d kick this wench’s butt Love & Hip-Hop style from here to kingdom come. Literally, there’d be a dimension of that caliber.
Yeah, I wouldn’t be so nice.
--And this…

...also funny and genius playing with the shade-around-the-eyes effect.

Elsewhere, Marco and Alfonzo have kept Ferguson hidden, with the former wanting Fergy to blow on a whistle to warn of an impending kidnapping by the Warriors. Ferguson reveals the real reason why we put on the costume: to pick up chicks. Marc takes no excuses and tries to shove the whistle into Ferguson’s mouth. Fergy refuses while Fonzy’s standing there watching the weirdness unfold.
Star is in the garbage and asking a group of stray cats to help out with her “Kity-Cat Offense”. When they instead eat a bone, she decides to do it the hard way: dive in and turn them into something else.
--I don't have much to say here, but that Butterfly Dive (heh, pun) into the dumpster was really funny.

At the Diaz Family Home, Marco is interrogating Ferguson about the kidnapping. Fergy wants to go home, giving a sissy reason to leave, Marco shuts that down, saying the rival team would look there first and set off the kidnapping. When Ferguson says that it feels like he’s the one committing the kidnapping, Marc threatens him with never seeing his parents again if he continues talk that way. Star calls him and, while climbing the telephone transformer wire and grabbing a wayward squirrel, asks if he owns flammable liquids. He says check the garage and she leaves the wire, taking the squirrel along.
Ferguson laments that he could get some action with a real possum tail and then tries to grab a soda can with it, but knock it over and destroys Marco’s laptop with it. The three just stare at it.
...cut to next scene.

It’s finally here! Game Time! The Warriors are ready to rumble, and the Awesome Opossums are…

yeah.
Marco still has Ferguson under lock and key. Then Star comes in with a medieval flail.
Marc takes her to the stands to talk...and immediately the Warriors take Fergy away.
Marco asks Star what’s she’s up to, with her answering that she rigged the field with booby traps. Marco realizes what Princess Cuckoo-Pants really has planned, he tells her that the Warriors aren’t really going to kill the Opossums, and that Football is a Game. When Star realizes what she did was wrong, it’s too late to fix it. The game has started and already the traps been set off. Everyone’s running for their lives and game has turned into Survival of the Fittest (yet not even the fittest will survive unscathed). Starco run into the war zone to take care off the deranged animals and clearly kick butt like it’s nothing. Seriously, Marco beat the crap out of a magic squirrel three times his size! Add Star using her wand to turn all the animals back to their normal forms is just beautiful.
Ferguson and the two Warriors run out but he’s and runs to Marco, who wants him off the field but is struck by bomb. Marco tearfully runs to his fallen friend and . That is, until Ferguson wakes up and tells him he’s playing possum. Marco is delighted to hear of this, but angrily shakes Fergy and tells him “This is why you only have two friends!”
With the field now destroyed (as in The Avengers destroyed), Star realizes that she really messed up. But Marco corrects her saying that they really messed up and that he should’ve kept an eye out for what she’s doing before hand.
(Thank you!! That’s what I’ve been saying.
You know what, I just realized something. Sometimes when a story relies on ignorance and end up making viewers angry, that seriously messes up the episode entirely. But here, when a character realizes that what another character has done could’ve been prevented had he said something earlier, this could make the episode much better. Marco has only been with Star for not very long, and that he still hasn’t realized what she is and isn’t capable of just yet and that as her guide, he should be mindful of what she does while staying in Echo Creek. Sure, he messed up this time, but he and Star should realize that if you make a mistake, you should learn from it, and use it to make your . Like I said earlier, Star has a lot to learn while on Earth, but with Marco on her side, she doesn’t have much to worry about. She’s in good hands.)
Well, this ha been a very solid episo--wait. Oh yeah, it’s not over yet.
The Warriors, realizing what just happened has scarred them, run out of the field and back to where they came from. Buff Blond Boy realizes the forfeited, and that the Opossums won the game. The team and crowd cheer on and members pick up Star, Marco and Ferguson. Star mentions that she may have forgot something, the winged creature that just dragged Marco away.

So all in all, a very solid episode. I quite enjoyed all of both of them; there were some big laughs, the characters (besides Star and Marco) are fleshed out as much as you can expect, the dark parts were scary and unsettling and even the music was great and accentuates the mood perfectly. This is an episode I will watch more. There were parts I can do without, but those were few and far in-between. That's more than I can say for the next episode.

Well, that wraps the books on another review. Again, I'd like to thank the Star vs. The Forces of Evil page on Wikia for help me out on the review. There are so much I did know about the show or this episode that they did, so I can't thank them enough for every detail and information they archive at the site. And I'm forever grateful for them.
Thank you guys.

Tune in next week for my review of "Monster Arm" and "The Other Exchange Student". To be honest, I didn't like one of them. And I have a gut feeling not many people will like it and I may have gone into this reviewing thing for this show a little too much. But hey, this is what I'm ready for when doing reviews. And I'm ready for what happens.

So until then, I'm Andrew, reach for the Star and keep looking up!...at your TV screen.

Trevor Noah Criticized for Old Tweets Before "Daily Show" Ascension

Here's something you've never thought could happen: a comedian being criticized for an old joke he/she made.

That's what comedian (and future host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central)
Trevor Noah got into a few weeks ago when, after the official announcement came in from the cable network that Noah will succeed the great Jon Stewart at the end of this year. Some old tweets from Twitter have resurfaced and they have seemingly painted Noah in a bad light. (It seems that bunch of people don't like Trevor Noah or just can't stand to see Jon Stewart leave) Here are some of the tweets that are supposed to be enough to have Noah's head on a stake (These come from 2011 and 2012):
One about being a rich Jewish man while making light of the Holocaust
(I wish I could defend him by saying he's half Jewish and half Swiss-German, but I'm on the fence.)
One about soccer superstar Lionel Messi, with a nice subtle message about Jewish women having sex

And another about domestic violence (I can't be subtle about this):

WHAT THE SERIOUS HELL??

This tweet from BuzzFeed's Tom Gara just sums up this situation:

And here they are:

Okay that one is really funny.

While some people have criticized Noah for his dusted-down mini-statements,

others have come to his defense.

Here's the thing from me: He's a comedian. Comedians say raunchy, shocking and controversial things all the time. It's not something to even sneeze at at times.
And if you think that The Daily Show is some high-brow intellectual news program with highly regarded correspondents tackling taboo issues no other programs can't touch that he has no right being even 50 feet near, then...you're right, but up to a point. The Daily Show is an intellectual program, but it's not exactly high-brow (nor is it low-brow; I'm never gonna say that), the correspondents do tackle taboo issues, but they're not exactly the cast of 60 Minutes, and he is a correspondent too.

Here's what you all just can't notice--at the end of the day, The Daily Show is a satirical news program. They make fun of the big news of the day, no matter how painful or serious the story is (except for 9/11 of course). So it can't be a stretch to assume that this show is a high holy grail of television...Except it is when it comedy. And (again) this dude is a comedian! He has made jokes like this before. Even on The Daily Show. And it makes no sense to open your mouths about these tweets when they were posted 3 YEARS AGO!! No one said a damn thing about them then, so why the stupid background check on him now? That's just wrong.

Stop with the damn outrage! What's the point? It's frickin' Comedy Central!! They're known for stuff like this since the day South Park premiered. SOUTH! PARK! I understand some of you don't like him and his humor, but digging old dirt to try to destroy a comedian taking over a comedy show is just deceitful and sad, and just isn't going to work. Trevor Noah is the next host of The Daily Show. Get used to it. Jon Stewart won't stay there forever. If you guys can handle Stephen Colbert ending The Colbert Report, you gotta shape up for the end of an era. This guy is gonna be the next TDS host, and you'll all have nothing to do but fret.

Trevor, from a potentially mixed-race brother to a 100%-sure mixed-race brother, I give you mad respect, and wish you lots of luck later in the year as the new host of The Daily Show.

SNL 40 Review: Dwayne Johnson & George Ezra

Well, guys.
It took a long time (two episodes and a damn long hiatus) but they've done it. The writers of SNL 40 have actually pulled out a really funny episode. And the fact that Dwayne Johnson hosted it just makes it that way. Most of the sketches were hilarious, Dwayne was the best as he's ever been, the cast did a great job in some of their roles, and musical gues George Ezra was simply wonderful during his musical set.
So let's journey through this absolute gold mine and find some gems.

The Cold Open takes place at the White House as President Obama (Jay Pharoah) sits down and talks with Senator Tom Colton (Kyle Mooney), Representative of the House John Boehner (Taran Killam) and Senator Ted Cruz about their recent action involving bills and laws being signed behind his back.
These actions have angered the President one too many and causes him to (somehow) turn into...The Rock Obama!

His bulky, Hulky, Rocky state frightens the conservative leaders and sends them running, and in Boehner’s case, flying...out the window.

This was a pretty funny CO. The short, dickish answers from the Republican caricatures was chuckle-worthy and seeing the actual sequence of Obama turning to The Rock was really cool. Not to mention seeing The People’s Champ as the President was awesome. At first, when watching Live, I thought Pharaoh was VO-ing with Johnson mouthing his lines; but No, that really is him talking as Obama, so that made this sketch even more cooler.
And to jack this up to 150%, seeing Michelle also Hulk-out (or Wig-out, I guess) to She-Rock, with LesJo playing the role so great.

Monologue time!! And let me say first that it is awesome!
Dwyane walks to the stage and talks with the audience and viewers about his recent success in starring in film sequels , and turned it into a slowed-down R&B ballad number about it.
Johnson had the charisma and energy to make the song work, and the female cast members make it light up with their vocals.
This may be--will be one of the coolest Mono this season, and one of the best involving singing.

PepBoys/”Genderflect”
The Pre-Tape After is a spoof on Starbucks’ recent screwup of making baristas write hastags involving recent real life scandals on customers’ coffee cups, by featuring Pepboys doing a similar campaign, involving discussions with customers about equality in gender identity and sexual orientation. Straight genius.

I found the employees’ disturbing and inappropriate discussions hilarious, especially the one about being a hermaphrodite and fucking yourself anytime you like like it’s straight sex.
I really can’t get enough of this right here.

In this Sketch After, two wrestlers are ripping a promo in time for Wrestlemania.
Koko WatchOut (The Rock) is trash talking with Trashyard Mutt (Moyni), but Ko begins to take this...a little too personal. About Mutt.

This sketch is like straight-up Anarchism. The WWE and Wrestlemania logos are correct, but the wrestler characters (and announcer [TKill]) look like the came straight out of the late 80s or early 90s. I mean do male wrestlers still wear long and/or sparkling coats with boas optionally attached? I really don’t think so.
Other than that, it was still funny. Rocky using his acquired talents for this made it work, even if it was obviously going to happen. And Bobby was also funny as Trashyard, and his reactions are hilarious.

For the past few years, Disney has been making a questionable choice to its film library: remaking its iconic animated films and turning them into recently-made live-action hit movies. Including Maleficent (from Sleeping Beauty) and Cinderella, with Beauty and the Beast, Mulan and Dumbo, of all movies, on the way. This decision has pissed a lot of people off, so SNL has taken the liberty to turn those frowns upside down, by mocking Disney with this spoof on another iconic animated film turned into a cash-grabbing exhibition. And an unexpected one, too...Bambi.

Another genius one. The mashup with Bambi and Furious 7 (with both being “directed” by James Wan) was awesome, the dramatic acting from everyone was infectiously great, and...the deer puns, doe. The deer puns were deliciously corny and the performances from Johnson and the cast members were amazing.
Johnson (as Johnson/Bambi), TKill (Vin Diesel/Thumper), Pharaoh (Tyrese/Flower) and CecStrong (Michelle Rodriguez/Faline) were genius choices for the roles/characters, emulating the cast and characters of Furious 7, while portraying the characters of the Disney icon.
Also, that butterfly part had me dying. And Also reminds me of something:

I wish the “Bambi” pre-tape aired after the Mono, so it can drive the point home about starring in sequels home. Also, Disney needs to stop with the live-action remakes. They are the definition of creativity, so this has to be embarrassing. Oh well, as long as money talks, then they’ll be fine.

In “Dinner Date”, a couple Gene & his girlfriend (Kenan and Aidy) are joined by an odd, out-there couple (Dwayne and Cecily [plays Jemma with a convincing British accent]) on a dinner date. The two men met in jury duty, but this meeting is nothing to sneeze at.

No doubt, this was absurdly hilarious. With some of the jokes coming out of nowhere, Johnson playing the weido/cool tag-along man so amazingly, CecStrong playing the flighty Brit GF so well, I couldn’t stop laughing.

“Escape from Jungle Island”
In this 1983 classic film airing on TNT, Doctor Bones (Johnson), his young, eager, Robin-like assistant (Pete Davidson), and his lovely language translator Miss Reese are on a journey for find priceless artifacts on a mysterious island. But when Dr. is shot with poisonous darts, it’s up to one of his assistants to save his life. Guess who it is. (Hint: It’s not Miss Reese, to her chagrin.)

This is hilarious based on Dr. Bones attractiveness, the times he gets shot in the darts and Miss Reese's eagerness to suck his body parts with the darts as scapegoat, and her anger every time she gets shot down. Also, this wouldn’t been noticed back in the 80s, but the Homo-eroticism between the Doctor and Short-Long (heh, nice name) is on full alert here. I actually hope Reese would get the long end (heh, pun)) at least once, but ends up short every
time, and that’s super funny.

In this Pre-Tape, a frat party is in full swing. One brother is dared to a keg stand, and is successful, but that leads to an embarrassing revelation: he’s bald.

I love the little joke based on the recent scandal of a viral video of white male students at the University of Oklahoma reciting a singing chant involving the N-word. Also, the gag with the other frat bro at the spirits store being seen as a grown man, while the old man is seen as young was also hilarious.

In this next sketch, Cooking with Paul, Paul Montaine (Kenan) is an award-winning chef and (as explained in the open VO, for some reason which helped with the plot) is a three-time sex offender. What?

The look on Paul’s face at the start when sex offender was said was very creepy and funny at the same time. His voice doesn’t (or does) help, and Johnson does great work as his straight-man foil of a probation officer. Although, I thought it was a really weak concept: a TV chef cooking a recipe and going to his computer to watch children in an inappropriate behavior and manner, while his probation officer sous stops him from going further. I didn’t find it hilarious, but was chuckle-worthy.

Improv Show
At an improv show, a group is preparing for a performance, and draw some inspiration from an unlikely source: Robert Durst.

Kate Mc was awesome as Durst (in character, not the man; he’s cool in the slightest) and the Improv Show concept with him would’ve been amazing, but there wasn’t much time to let it grow (the time stamp on Yahoo! Screen was almost 3 1/2 minutes), and the rest of the sketch was just confusing as hell. There were some jokes that were funny to me, and some that were funny to the audience, but not me. Plus, Jeanine Pirro’s (CecStrong) appearance here was just a waste and confusing.
Also, the dialogue of the emcee and Prince Charmin’ felt more fake than needed to be. Also, on the looks of the group members’ faces, it seemed like they’re smiling on the outside with some fear hidden within. At least I thought so, as it would’ve been more funnier for their true behaviors to be shown. Also, their seeping fear of Durst could’ve made the sketch. Also, Johnson wasn’t in it, for some reason, All in all, a terrible skit, indeed. (Maybe The Rock could’ve been it’s Viagra)

In Interrogation, two cops are trying to get a suspect to reveal his motive in a crime he committed. But one of the officers is a little in there too excited to get the perp talking.

Okay, his insults were near gut-busting, and the way Johnson said them were hilarious. This obviously isn't one of the best sketches of the episode by far, but it's chuckle-worthy indeed.

those eyes...such blueness.
Musical Guest George Ezra is someone I've never heard of or mentioned...ever. Then when I watched a video by Marc Mues about the songs found in the bottom of the Billboard 100 in February 2015 and there he was with a nice, soft tune called "Budapest". I took a quick listen at it, and thought it was a really good song. Then when his name pulls up in the surprise announcement on the SNL social media pages a few weeks ago, I was interested in seeing what song he would be performing (besides "Budapest", of course). And now, he has that song. "Blame It On Me".

But first, the aforementioned "Budapest", which is very calm and mellow, but bursting with enough energy to make it great. It's not too bold, but not dull either. Ezra's vocals are deep and raw but can carry the track all the way, and make it a lovely lively song to listen to at any time and any other mood.
One thing I found irritating about this performance is how Ezra says the "You-Oooh" line, which is different than the original recorded version. This irritates me a lot and I tend to mute it every time I watch this. Other than that it was a wonderful performance.

As for the performance, all I can go about saying is, George's smiling is fucking infectious. Just watching him grin just makes me grin. It reminded me of that moment when Hozier smiled during his performance of "Angel of Small Death" back in Episode 3.
I just love it when a performer on SNL smiles. Whether because he/she loves performing a song live or that doing such on a big stage like SNL will bring them to the big leagues, like where old Georgie Porgie here is.

Now onto "Blame It On Me", which is more fast in pacing and has more understandable lyrics than "Budapest". The beat is really nice and has an advantage in use of electric guitars and bass, which is also really nice. And Ezra has better vocals here than "Budapest".

I think George Ezra is a huge talent and will be a big hit in the near future as a big folk/rock artist. I can just feel it.

Time For an Update:
Part 1:

Part 2: none

I must say, Jost & Che have grown steadily in recent episodes. Here, though, they have gotten better. I will say that they have spoken really slow, as if they are trying to get the Audience and viewers to hear and understand the stories. This was annoying, but the jokes were funny, so I'll give them a pass.

Kate Mc appeared as Russian woman Olya Povlatsky and discussed the Russian economy.

Well, I won't have much to say but...everything Kate McKinnon does is funny. Even the weaker roles she'll play are funny. She'll just take the role, put her style and humor in it, and make it hilarious.
Look at this again.

She's just THAT talented.

Kenan also stopped by as Willie, an optimistic man whom tries to cheer up Michael, who isn't in the best of interest when it comes to Spring.

It wasn't great, but I enjoyed the happy felling Willie showed during his appearance. The "cat dukey" joke also cracked my up. (What? Crap humor jokes can work with me sometimes.)

Anyway, this was a slightly-above-average Update for me.
Che and Jost were cool, but still have work to do. And the jokes were getting better and better. I think they should speed up their talking a bit; I want them to make me laugh, but I also want them to make me stay up for the rest of the show.
Kate and Kenan were pretty good as the characters and bumped up the grade from Average, so it's not too bad.

Was the CO Good?
The-Rock (and She-Rock) Obama
It was Vintage Rock (meaning it was great)

Best Sketches:
Dinner Date
Franchise Viagra Mono
The Jungle Island
honorable mention
WWE Promo Shoot

Worst Sketches: (this time they were more weak than horrible)
Cooking with Paul (for just being a guy on his laptop looking at kids)
Interrogation (just lame puns)
dishonorable mention
Improv Show (for not taking the concept and letting it grow)

In the end this was a really good episode.
Dwayne Johnson is as energetic and awesome as host as he's ever been. He puts his effort and talent from his days in the WWE into his characters and jokes and always amazes me, even though I knew he could do it. There is no way he couldn't be as awesome as he was in his last few appearances. He just plain...Rocks.
Also, the cast have done really well too, especially Kate McKinnon. She is just like Johnson, except she's a petite blonde white woman with a talent for sketches so great, you still wouldn't have it coming when she performs. I can't say more because...that's basically all I want to say. She that good.

I've enjoyed this ep a lot. And I eagerly await the few years The Rock will appear again.

Next week, Michael Keaton will be making his third appearance on SNL as host of Episode 17, with music from Carly Rae Jepson, whom will be making her first appearance. Keaton is making a comeback in film, starring in Birdman, which won an Academy Award for Best Picture, while Jepson is making a comeback in music, somehow making another hit after "Call Me Maybe", which won nothing (at least important).
See you then!
