SYTYCD Live Review: Ep. 9--The End is Nigh--Near--NOW! Part 1

Welcome to Maroon Mondays’ review of the Live Shows of “So You Think You Can Dance”.
As with my reviews of Rising Star and America's Got Talent, the opinions are less professional than those of the TV-show websites.

Well, folks, the time has almost finally come. THE FINALE IS (almost) HERE!! The Top 4 dancers have reached the final hurdle before fighting one last time for the choice to become the winner of the season and the title of “America’s Favorite Dancer”.
So, which dancer was my favorite and which dance captured my attention? Let’s find out.

We start of the finale with a Group Dance, in which the Final Four give an emotional performance by this Contemporary dance choreographed by Travis Wall.

Valerie & Ricky start off the competition phase with an African Jazz routine by Sean Cheesman to "Voices of Savannah" by DJ Chus. It looked vibrant and quick, but not really great. Of course Ricky was the better of the two as I found Val to be lacking in some parts.

Next up, Jessica & Zack do a Broadway bit to “Hernando’s Hideaway” by Ella Fitzgerald. I was hoping this would be a great dance when Jess showed up strutting her stuff; her sexy, super stuff. But I was satisfied anyway. The fire, the passion and the power; this dance had them all. Zack commanded his parts, while Jess just walked the walked.

Val later teams up with Zack to do a Tyce Diorio-Contemp dance to Sade’s “Pearls”. The story here is some guy who helps a blind woman find her way, which is very emotional. And the emotion chemistry between them is perfect; so perfect it made me tear up immediately. This is definitely Jess’ better dance and Zack also did an awesome job.

Jess later switches up with Rick for this Ray Leeper-Jazz bit to “F for You” by Disclosure feat. Mary J. Blige. I thought Jessica was the better woman to dance with Rick. The synchronicity was amazing and the moves were simple, yet still powerful.

These next dances are gender-bending--at least since the first live show:
The guys and the girls switch it up again, this time joining the other same dancer for the dances that make it awesome; at least, I see it that way.

First, Jess & Val perform Bollywood bit by Nakul Dev Mahajan to "Ghahra" from the Yeh Jawaani Jai Deewani Soundtrack.

And Rick & Zack do a Pharside/Phoenix--Hip-Hop Rappin’ Routine (a-ha, alliteratives) to District 78’s “The Antidote”. Although I felt the parts in the beginning were a little dull, this dance was bangin’ cool. Especially the part where Ricky jumps onto Zack, and Z just doesn’t hit the floor; Rick stops him in time. That was suh-weet.

I really don’t have time to type the dances with the All-Star contestants who’ve appeared in series past. Your opinions matter here.
Valerie with Aaron Turner

Ricky with Kathryn McCormick

Zack with (again) Aaron...and…

Jessica with Robert Roldan.

Well, no eliminations were given this week, as we’ve reached the Final Four. We’ll know who made it to the top of the heap as America’s Favorite Dancer next week during the final show of Season 11. Tune in for the review on Thursday for my Favorite Dances of the Season and my thoughts on the season. See you then, everybody. Goodnight!!

Sanrio: Hello Kitty Not a Cat--People: WHAAAATT?!??--Me: *FACEPALM*

Hey. You guys know what Hello Kitty is, so I'll get to the point.
This week, Sanrio, the Japanese company behind it, made a reveal that the anthropomorphic animal of our happiness, is not what we all really thought she was all these years: a cat. She's not a cat, but a "person" that so happens to look like a cat. The LA Times reports that University of Hawaii anthropologist Christine R. Yano found some news while working on a HK retrospective exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum.
More deets here: http://www.thewire.com/culture/2014/08/what-mrow-hello-kitty-is-not-a-cat/379252/

Really? Who gives a flying fuck about this?? And who should? Because the sad thing about it is that people are actually angry about this. ANGRY!!
There are people dying in the Middle East, Robin Williams recently died, people are wasting water on the Ice Bucket Challenge (at least some are) and there was a nearly-month-long standoff in Ferguson, MO, after the death of Mike Brown. I'm even angry that Ricky Gervais didn't win an Emmy. And yet, many people choose to be angry at this crap?! Really, people? It's a frickin' fake character!!! Who should care about what it is, or how it looks like? Well, except those crazy, annoying diehard fans of TV shows, movies and comic books. Hello Kitty is just a thing with clothes on and no mouth behind a pink background. I don't know (or get) the appeal of this, but it's there. When I heard about this story, I thought: "Hello Kitty is still around?" and "Why should I care?" and 'What's for dinner?". That's all I have, because I find this shit absurd enough to not be considered a thing to discuss among ourselves. And yet, in the age of social media, this is what we have to look at.

And to the people who are actually pissed about it: Why the hell do you care?? Hello Kitty is a fictional character. The only thing we actually know is that she's a female, we love the cuteness about her and all the merch we have of her and her friends is astronomical. Why the hell do you care about the fact that she's not what you think she is? Or the puzzling fact that she's British, despite the fact that Sanrio is a Japanese company. This just doesn't make sense. Kinda like your mindset; you need to fix that.

I bet @midnight is gonna have a field day (or night) with this.

#AGT Review: Ep. 5--The Semi-Circle of Finals Part 1-Spared by a Judge (That Likes My Looks)

Hey, guys. It's finally here. The Semi-finals!! This week, the best acts from the Quarter-finals have made their mark and have been given a second chance by America (or the judges by way of the Judges’ Save) to take their talent higher or go home one step closer to the top, but have to go back down because they started lacking. Also, some acts come back as Wild Card picks, and thanks to the judges having the brains(?) to realize actually good talent (depends on the judge) and make this competition more exciting. Let’s see what happens during this week’s review.

Speaking of the Wild Card Picks, while only the Two How’s make some actual picks that are worth staying in the competition, Mel B and Heidi chose some very, very mixed acts, and both of them involved hot guys close to tearing their shirts off or having them off anyway.

One of them the first act returning is Flight Crew Jump Rope. Although I liked this one a bit, I felt that this act was on the same level of talent and similarity to their last performance. There were some differences, including the intricate act in the middle, but the feeling is still there.
The judges were very divided on the act. Both Mel and Heidi loved it and Howie and Howard thought it had sameness to it.

Mara Justine is up next, singing “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson.
I don’t know what to say about this girl. I know this girl can sing, but her voice is puzzling. It sounds like a black girl at choir practice (not a bad thing), and her breathing control is terrible (that’s a bad thing). If she can fix that, then I’ll like her more. So, yeah, she did a great job.
(And on a side note, if Howard Stern gives a standing ovation for you, you KNOW you’re gonna go far; never mind the other judges, just him.)

Bad Boys of Ballet is another Wild-Card choice. They were really mixed last time, and were told by Howie to put more “Bad” in their act, which would be a good thing. And they did up the “Bad”, which helped them a bit. They guys got better in personality (The jean jackets don’t count) and the dancing was a little better. The girl is terrible. She stands there a couple times while the boys do more. I know she’s now really the main part, but that just sticks out to me. She did better last time.

Later on Paul Ieti plays classic Backstreet Boys by singing “I Want it That Way”.
He has a nice calm, soothing voice, but I think this song wasn’t the best for him to use. A major clue being that song was sung by 5 GUYS. Also, I heard pitchiness in a lot of places and the high points didn’t sit well with me.
Mel said that if he played it back, that he would be disappointed at what he hears, Howie was blunt when he said that Mara (a 12-YEAR-OLD girl vs. a GROWN MAN) is better than him; I definitely agree.

And now, Howard’s WC pick, Mike Super. If he seems unfamiliar, it because he previously was in a duo with Desmond. All I can say is “Oh Shit! This was really good.” The suspense in the box, the amazing transferring via a string from the box to the platform and the reveal of the symbol in his hand (Howard randomly chose a Triangle) was just astounding.
All 4 judges loved the act (Howard said getting rid of “that dumb dead [idiot] Desman” really did the trick) and so did I.

Andrey Morau the hand balancer returns for another round. This time the stakes can’t be any higher, mostly because his act is the same, yet has to be different, and must need the votes to go to the finals. And it was...really good. I enjoyed it a lot. He seems like an act made for Vegas. (Also to my readers, I apologize for incorrectly naming Andrey as “Audrey”, because his name looks very identical to the female name. Again, my apologies.)

Miguel Dakota sang The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army”.
I like this rendition a lot. And his voice is great. Just like his change-up of “Come Together”, he’ll take a classic song, put his own spin on it (or have the music man on this show make it the way he wants it), and not only make it his own, but it’ll sound great. He’s the male singer that gonna go far in the competition. And not just on looks.

Next, Sons of Serendip performed “Don’t You Worry Child” by Swedish House Mafia. This was more slower and soothing than the ear-splitting original, and this was amazing. The string-work never fails me and their voices was just as astonishing. And it almost made me cry. Okay, I teared up a little, but they were still really good.

David and Leeman were back for more magic and humor. This time, the act involves a sharp metal nail on a block of wood with a red X on it, and this was placed in one of 5 bags by random. The trick was to press the others without hitting the nail button. It was questionable that they pressed three buzzers anyway, but that was part of the trick. I felt less bored than last time, and felt more on-the-edge-of-my-seat, but I was a little more confused though (that’s not a stretch). Thank God neither of them hit the nail button, though.

Dan Naturman is BACK. UGH. First off, the songs that play before he makes his act set are really unnecessary and unfunny. Don’t worry, though, he got better this time. And he dropped the awkward sound in his voice. The one where his relatives asked him if he found a woman with “chemitry” was a really good one. I think he deserved to at least come back this week.

Later, Arial Animation did another sight for sore eyes in animation and acrobatics. This time, though...it just bored me. Like “almost to death” bored me. Not much here excites me; Just her riding a Pegasus, getting shot down by ducks, fighting off star-shaped arrows from bright constellations and flying on balloons. That’s it. That was so under so-so.

And finally, the sexy and sultry Emily West singing Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever”. Her voice was just astounding. I think she’s the best singer this season, hands down. Hearing it just bring a smile to my face. I think this was just as great as when she sung “Chandelier”, if not better. She just makes everyone happy with her voice.

And now, a Random Thought about this week:
It’s pretty clear that Mel & Heidi are incredibly pleasing and fangirl-like, while the 2 Hows were cranky and serious. The girls just shower praise [which annoyed me] except when the act is truly bad (and that only happened ONCE) and the guys were brutally truthful about their opinions except when the act is at least really good (and their opinions are really accurate, I even thought Howie was on point in most parts, and he’s the straight-up goofball judge).
But I thought most of the critiques were really deserving this week.

Best Act of the Week: Mike Super & Emily West
(Special Mention: Flight Crew Jump Rope)
Worst Act of the Week: Paul Ieti
(Special Mention: Bad Boys of Ballet)

And now, elimination time.
Moving on to The Finals is:
--Mara Justine (the Snapple Save; a save thanks to voting on Google[makes more sense to call it the Google Save])
--Mike Super (Much better without that dumb, dead Desmond)
--Miguel Dakota (Cool rockin’ voice)
--Sons of Serendip (Just pure music; such nice fingering)
--David and Leeman (they need to make their act more exciting [or a little more intense])-and…
--Emily West (Very well-deserved)

Leaving and Going Home are:
-Flight Crew Jump Rope (why Mel wanted them back is beyond me…)
-Bad Boys of Ballet (why Heidi wanted them back is beyond me…oh yeah)
-Paul Ieti (He’s just terrible; no more words)
-Andrey Morau (I liked this one, but understood why he was eliminated; his act was just the same thing over)
-Dan Naturman (Still not a million-dollar act, still awkward)-and…
-Arial Animation (It just wasn’t there like last time).

And that’s it. That’s the review for now. All the better acts of this week have moved on to the finals, and many more will get a chance to make it there too, next week. Tune in next Thursday for the review. Goodbye, everyone.

MaroonMondays Awards Reviews: MTV Video Music Awards 2014

Hi, MTV. I’m Andrew for Maroon Mondays.
You may have read my review of the Video Music Awards last year, snarking about how terrible it was and how dull and dimly-lit it was. Here’s what I said:

Next year, MTV, do better. Get a host. Make it brighter. And stop making those trashy moments; they now seem forced and sad. The BET Awards are kicking your ass, and they are more entertaining. And yet I thought they were the bad one.

Mr. MTV, I’m so sorry. You kind did get better. I was angry at the Miley fiasco, how (intentionally) strange it was, and how questionably tiny her ass was. Because of that it, spread to the entire show. I thought the rest was really good. I honestly enjoyed it. All the other performances were awesome and the winners (some of them, anyway) were well-chosen ones indeed. So, please forgive me.

Anywho...
Hey, everyone. Andrew here welcoming you to my review of the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. And of course this show is known (and very-well remembered) for its shocking and controversial moments, one of them happened last year during Miley Cyrus’ performance. And boy, do I remember it very well. pink teddy bears, Chuck E. Cheese swimsuit/costume, foam finger (*shudder*), Robin Thicke coming out and then she twerked on his meat (I think he felt anything when she was all over him, if you know what I mean.)
If you want to know what was all about, here it is:

This years’ show took place at the Forum (remembered previously as The Great Western Forum; seen Space Jam? Yeah.) in Inglewood, CA, continuing MTV’s trek of putting the VMAs in places that aren’t New York City, LA, or Vegas (although they went to Miami once). Probably they might go to Chicago, Charlotte or even Galveston, TX in a few years. As with last year, there was no host. I can understand this given how huge and lavish the sets are and how amazing the graphics look every year (you readin’ this, BET?), but it’s odd how they don’t spend some money on a host. Hell, I could be the host and do it for FREE if they asked me. Oh well.

Okay, enough with the technical crap, let’s get with the review.

We begin with catastrophic star Ariana Grande performing what can be her next hit of many, “Break Free”. Her voice sounds deeper and breathier than her last performances. And a little scratched. Outside of her great voice, her stage presence was wooden and robotic; all she did was stand and walk. No emotion in that And another thing, I thought this song was about love and stuff, like that song with a similar name from High School Musical. Nope, it one of the many pop songs with the beat of electronic music (God, these things annoy the fuck outta me, like outsourcing music from to DJs with turntables and computers). Anyway, the performance was mixed; voice was great but everything else was dull.
--
Straight after that, Nicki Minaj (and her co-star, her colossal ass) perform "Anaconda". I song I HATE...with a passion. The song’s about the desire a man has of having some chick’s fat ass on his dick. It’s obnoxious, forced and all-the-way annoying. She was lip-synching, and I didn’t have time for the strip sequence. Although, this was more--umm--exciting than Ari’s performance.
--
Straight after THAT, Jessie J slayed it with her single “Bang Bang”. This third of the set was the hands-down best of them all. Just her standing there with her voice can beat Ari and Nicki clean. And her legs (DAY-Yum). This part was the Best Performance by a female so far.

Taylor Swift took the stage and shook some of herself off on it, performing the song that’s not going to NOT reach the Top 40, “Shake It Off”. It’s a really good song with a very good beat. And even though it’s about how pissy she is about some boy who messed her up (and there IS the subtext about this too.), this song is one I actually like from the jump. Her dancing skills was... One part of the performance was really funny. During the bridge, Taylor was on top of this setup of 1989 (the name of her latest album), signaling to us she was going to jump from it and into the arms of her male dancers. She then thought “Fuck this!” and decided against it, saying and went downstairs to continue the performance. This was one of my favorites of the night.

Next up, Sam Smith sings the song that made him a star overnight, and a superstar at the end of the year, “Stay with Me”. his voice is perfect in every way. And when he sings it live, it’s a different kind of perfect. This one for me was the Best Performance by a Male of the night. I don’t care if the dude has to move around and dance, he must have a voice to back that up. And Sam has the voice that overpowers everything else. He deserves to be a star, and I’m glad to watch his star rise.

Usher performed “She Needs to Give it to You” with Nicki Minaj. Everyone was wearing white like they were in a Got Milk? commercial. I don't know the song, but Usher sung it very good. Then Nicki Minaj came out looking like she sheared Lamb Chop’s family for that fur she wore. She was--well, I really could care less about Nicki, but that fur stuck out to me. This performance was Meh, along with the song. The beat is really good, the whole “I’m gonna give it to you” is getting really old. I mean, saying “give it to me” is like yelling at someone to give you a cookie, not your desire to cum.

Later on, that band I still barely know existed, 5 Seconds of Summer sang “Amnesia”. It was a good performance, but, to be honest (and I don’t wanna sound mean), I don’t care for or about them. They’re good musicians, but I’m not a fan of them. And all I can say is these guys should be grateful to MTV for putting them in a stage of this caliber because there will be a time when they wouldn’t be popular and famous and that they’ll be just an obscure thing in music. Remember Young the Giant? Yeah.

Iggy Azalea performed her song “Black Widow” with featured artist Rita Ora. Both ladies brought the sex appeal to this one. both looking sexy in black skin-tight body. This one, though was kinda dull, despite the "spider and its web" concept.

Next, Maroon 5 performed “Maps” from a concert stage outside the Forum. And MTV made it look like a damn concert, too. The song is really good, and the beat is the same. Although I’m not much of a fan of Adam Levine’s voice, he does make the song sound good this time. I really enjoyed this one.

Finally (the woman BET only got on tape, but MTV got in the flesh), BeyoncĂ©. She performed a medley of her songs from her surprise Self-Titled album. AND. SHE. SLAUGHTERED. IT. I MEAN COME ON. Who thought she WOULDN’T?! She sang every song live (and not lip-synched), looked smoking-hot sexy doing it, and each song somehow got more visually better than the last. The dancers were great, the backgrounds were awesome and fit the songs perfectly and her vocals were just...***Flawless. Plus, during shots of medley, her and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy is seen dancing to Mommy’s songs and cuteness was on overload. And then when the medley ended, the whole stadium was on their feet (cheering her), and Jay came to his superstar wife, their offspring in hand. And I just cried. It was just...MTV saved her for last and made a smart move doing it.

Even though no one else cares about it, the camera angles and production work really work in every performance. The people who produced the show (Den of Thieves) really knew what they were doing in those departments. So I’m one of the every few people of the internet to say this: Den of Thieves, you are a bunch of geniuses. Your production of the VMAs make it more visually amazing and beautiful to look at. Thanks for taking the VMAs to new heights.

And now some Random Thoughts from the show:
--That moment when Nicki Minaj held her dress tight during “Bang Bang”. Some people thought it was a “Wardrobe Malfunction”, but my sister (who was watching we me at the time) thought it was because of the quick timing because of the medley format, which makes much more sense. Ari had plenty of time to change, while Nicki had only two verses and a cut-up version of the chorus to wear the dress and change the fact that she used to wear something that highlighted her ass.

--Sam Smith is a star, needs to be a star, and will be a superstar when his next record comes out. Oh, and he needs to work with Adele SOON. because if I need to have my heart skip a few beats, this would be the perfect reason. These two artists changed music for the better, and this record they could make can blow all of music for the better.
By the way, during his performance, there were many cutaways to Kim Kardashian and Kendall & Kylie Jenner; more than what I ever really wanted (NONE). And don’t get me started about them texting during the heartfelt tribute to Michael Brown. Speaking of that…

--It was very nice of MTV to shed a few minutes for the tribute of the slain Ferguson, MO teenager, and having Common be the voice of the tribute was a great touch. He kept it short, sweet and classy.

--Honestly, in hindsight, having Jim Carrey & Jeff Daniels present an award on the show was a BAAAADD move. Jim acted like he was in character as every other character he played in his films, while Jeff tried hard to toe the line between sane and strange. So, in short, it was weird.

--I thought Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda performance was gonna put the censor on lock, but it was actually surprisingly tame, even for her. Not even her ass could make it really raunchy. I still don’t like it though; it’s still dull.

--I thought it was sweet during the moment when Miley Cyrus let an unknown guy accept the Video of the Year award for her. The message he gave was heartbreaking and then heartwarming. It made me want to help out for this cause he mentioned.

--Beyonce trended on Twitter overnight. And she deserved it. She later got out-trended by some guy named Frank Grimes.

--And finally, some good winners were chosen this year, although I thought better videos and musicians should’ve won.

Nevertheless, I liked this show, although I felt it was kinda dull, something I felt surprised by because it's the VMAs. Dull isn't its middle name. But it's survived by those strange and controversial moments, very few of which we got this year, probably even just one (if you count those vignettes with Jay Pharoah in them). Anyway, I really wouldn't mind if MTV made the VMAs much more upbeat and livelier next year; I want to feel happy when we're not watching a performer singing. I felt like I was about to die (you know, Beyonce killed me on the inside). If I can't do that, then I don't know why I should still watch the VMAs. I barely recognize names, it feels dull and dreary (Like Lorde's persona; unless she says "Thank you so much" in her beautiful New Zealand accent.) and it's the only thing I still watch on MTV anymore. Oh well.

Thank you guys for joining me for this review and join me...the next time an awards shoe comes up. But not the Emmys, because I'm winded. I Bark Fun--I mean, Bye-Bye!!

#AGT Weekly Review: Ep. 4--QuarterFinals Part 4-The Less Acts The Better

Okay, folks. We’ve reached the end of the line. The Quarterfinals has come and gone once again. The final berth of acts have gave it their best shot to reach the Semifinals, and we were there to see it all happen. Who will go big and who will--well, you know. Let’s get this review started.

First up, the Bad Boys of Ballet. Okay, strange name, but there’s a reason. They combine ballet with hip-hop, gymnastics and martial arts. As the girl boss says, it’s masculine and sexy. Bleh. I don’t know about them here; while the girl just looks pretty looking like P!nk, all the guys do is spin and flip, which is a little boring to me. Don’t get me wrong, their moves and skills are amazing, but not much excitement here. There are some parts I do like, but the rest was kinda lacking.

Mel and Heidi did love it (a lot), but I thought it was because of...something else. Howie thought it was good, which means it’s bad. He wanted to see more “Bad” in them, which would be good. I don’t get it either. Judge Stern agreed with Howie saying they have to be different to get America to vote for them, and I couldn’t agree with the guys more. This one was really mixed.

Next, One-Voice Children's’ Choir, a cutesy kids choir. They sang the really inescapable ditty from Frozen “Let it Go”. (Seriously, this is everywhere) Their voices are really cute and wonderful for young humans, and the lead singer Lexi really can using. These guys are amazing.

Later, Jonah Smith, a singer and pianist, performs Sam Smith(definitely-no-relation)’s immediate classic "Stay with Me”. He turns it classic soul-pop-gospel song. It really sounds different, and I love it. It still sounds oldies-lite, but he really put a fresh spin on it, which won me over. His voice is also great, along with his band, which was perfect. This guy should go through. And because of that, I name him my Favorite Act of the Week.

Dom the Bom’s Triple Threat. Okay. I won’t criticize the names because of how strange they are; only the acts and concepts. This act (three kids!!) is card throwing (if you don’t know what that is, the video is on top with Dominic to explain; they’re amazing) and this act involved throwing them at fruit, kinda like knives at pretty women assistants. This kid are amazing.

Dom’s skills are stupendous for a boy and the cuteness lever is at 101. Dom did mess up a more than a few times throughout (I can clearly see him knocking over the celery), and the it was a little boring. He’s really good for his age at what he does, but (I don’t deserve the hate) this one was really bad.I don’t blame the judges for not mentioning that or saying the audience or viewers might see as mean or rude, because they’re kids and people will hate them for it. Also, the boys did believe Howard was the “mean judge”, which is accurate. But I would’ve loved for Howard to say something true (mean) to them. And it’s obviously not gonna happen.

After that, Extreme Dance Company. They’re...what their title implies. Their moves are great, but not “Extreme”. I like their synchronicity also. But I have this feeling that their act this week just isn’t enough to move on to the Semis.

Emili and Daniel are cellists from Queens, NY. During their set, they cover a classic by The Rolling Stones called “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”. I thought it was awesome. Their cello work is fantastic, but the background band was a bad idea. They were a distraction to what was to shown to the audience and almost took away my interest. Fortunately, that didn’t happen. Next time I want them and the cellos, just them and the cellos. I want to hear what just that sounds like.

Nina Burri is a contortionist. I was very impressed by this one...although, I feel like this is an act that I’ve seen a hundred + times before on this show, and that I don’t think this is an act worth a million dollars, unless you join Cirque De Soleil. But Nina was really good and looks really good doing it.

Quintavious Johnson, a church/choir boy from Franklin, TN, sang (ugh) “And I Am Telling You” (because a fat black girl singing it is basic now) as performed by Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls. Wow, his voice is something else (although, I’m on the fence on whether that’s a good thing or not), but he can sing for a 12-year-old kid. Although one thing that irritates me is what that voice sounds like. It’s almost like singing with your mouth closed and your teeth clenched, and yet is somehow able to carry a voice. It's not a bad voice, but that's how I feel. This one is mixed, too, but I do like this little guy enough to not fully dislike him.

Mothmen Dance took the stage next. Besides dancing, their concept is flying while dancing. Which is really cool. Plus the animation playing behind them really makes the act work great. Although their dancing was dull, and from some comments I later read on YouTube, this dance was copied from last season’s finalist Fighting Gravity. So, this really set down my likeness of them.

Smoothini is a magician from Washington Heights, NY. First off, this sounds much more like a brand of Peanut Butter; Fits better there. Now to the act: He makes me disappear and levitate. Yeah, seems unoriginal, but his act is really good. Especially the parts where he folds a bill and turns it from a $100 to a $50 and so on, and when he pulls something from a bill that swims. That was impressive.

Later on, Jonatan Riquelme, yet another balancing act (this time “Rolla Bolla”), from Las Vegas. Remember Cristin Sandu from last year? When he fell twice? Yeah, that’s what he does. Be he’s more darker than Cristin, AND he does it much better (i.e. Doesn’t fall; I mean of course he wouldn’t, he’s several feet off the ground). He really impressed me. So I liked him a lot.

And finally, Kelli Glover from Cranford, NJ, sang “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys. She has a beautiful voice, and some parts sounded real good. Although, some parts stuck out badly. But she did a good job.

And now, the eliminations.
Advancing to the Semifinals are:
Jonah Smith
Emil and Daniel
Quintavious Johnson
Smoothini (the peanut butter man) and
Kelli Glover (Judges' Choice)

Leaving and Going Home are:
Bad Boys of Ballet (Who are not "Bad"...or "Boys" in any way)
One Voice Children's Choir (not because I hate "Let it Go")
Extreme Dance Company (who are not "Extreme at all; they should've danced with fire under them)
Nina Burri (who I thought should go on, but oh well)

Next week, the Semifinals are upon us!! The acts we’ve loved from these past weeks come back, and will either amaze again, be even better or fall under pressure. Who will shine like a lighthouse and who will dim like a dying bulb? We shall see. And, seriously, Nick--that mohawk, though. See you next week (at it's regular time--I think) for that, and the review on Thursday. Bye-bye!

#RisingStar Weekly Review: Ep. 9--The Love Semi-Ran Out

Welcome back, everyone. The Final is almost upon us. The 6 remaining contestants are singing for their lives during this week’s show, and as always, it was up to America to choose who makes it to next week’s finale. So let’s get ready as I give my opinions on all performances and hope that:
--The girls actually get better
--Jesse sings something NOT Rock
--And Joshua keeps his new hair-do
All right; let’s go!!

We start off this week with Austin, who performed “Love Runs Out” by OneRepublic. I already loved this the second he started singing. It was perfect; his vocal range was amazing, his control was on point, kept from going off key and wasn’t very pitchy. To me, his voice nearly sounds like that of frontman Ryan Tedder himself. Plus I loved when Austin walked off stage between the Experts’ chairs, which no one has ever done on this show before. He finishes at 81%.

Next up, Maneepat sings “Chandelier” by Sia. I thought she got a little better, but I still heard pitchiness here and there. And her high notes really need work. I wish I could like this, but I can’t. For every good thing involving her voice, there’s something bad involving her technical stuff. She really needs to work on that.

After that, Jesse rocked it once again. This time, it’s not as you would think he would. Case in point: JESSE SANG A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SONG! AND IT’S NOT ROCK!!! It’s Michael Jackson’s forever immortal “Billie Jean”. And he still rocks is out of the park. Although, it feels much...lower than his other performances. Maybe it's the song; I don't know. Maybe Rock really is his strongsuit. I shouldn't judge him on that. He still killed though
Doesn't matter what the WCV is; he still got through.

Dana sang Maroon 5’s “Sunday Morning”. Man, she hit this one out of the park. Her voice was absolutely amazing, and the jazz arrangement really compliments it. The sultry smooth sound really won me over. So I mane this one my Favorite Performance of the Week.

Audrey Kate was up next to perform “Killing Me Softly with His Song” by--the many people who sung it. Damn it was so good. Aud’s voice was absolutely beautiful. That sexy, sultry, smooth voice. Aaahhhh. I could just listen to this one rendition over and over again. Anyway, was so good, it couldn’t have been the one to kick her out of the competition. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to save her with 69% Fortunately, the West Coast had the brains to save her with 68%. (I’ll say why later) With that, I also name this one my Favorite Performance of the Week.

And finally, the Angel of Ballads and Calmness, Joshua, with the final performance of the season before the Finals: “What Hurts the Most” by Mark Wills. As much as I loved his voice, his performance felt like all the other renditions; just a ballad and sad, haunting voice spitting out lyrics, and, in fact, this one wasn't even that great to me. Joshua ended the performance with 72%...but didn’t make it to the finals, why? Well, let me explain.

You see, Joshua had 72% in the East Coast voting, BUT has 67% in the West Coast voting, while Aud had 68%, making a squeaker of a win for Audrey to beat him out for the open to the final. So, West Coast voting is much more important to help contestants go through, than East Coast, at least what I think.

So because of that, Josh and Maneepat leave the competition this week. I liked Maneepat but loved Joshua. And I liked his hair really much. So in rememberance, here's the picture I made last week to remember him by...
Aahhh...
There it is.
Oh yeah, I'll miss Maneepat, too.

Anyway, well...next week, IT'S FINALLY HERE. THE FINALE!! It's between Jesse, Austin, Dana and Audrey for the win and the crown of Rising Star's first (and probably only) winner!! Tune in Sunday (seriously, I have hope for a Season 2) and then Monday for the review. Don't worry, there will still be a review for the MTV Video Music Awards. See you then, folks. Bye-bye!!

#SYTYCD Live Review: Ep. 8--Dimmed Lights, Red Balloons & A Sail Over You in This World on a String

Hey guys. Welcome back. We've almost reached the home stretch as it's down to the Top 6. Let's see which dances shined and which stunk.

First up, Valerie & Ricky with this Broadway dance choreographed by Spencer Liff to “I’ve Got the World on a String” by Ole blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. This dance was very elegant and graceful, like the other Broadway dances this season. But, this one was more slow and Ricky was the better of the two; his leg lifts and kicks really make this dance. Plus, the jump through the swing was also cool. Val was fine here, but couldn’t keep up with Rick on this one. But great job for these guys.

Up next, Jessica & Casey do a Disco ditty to Donna Summer’s “Dim the Lights”. Boy did I love it. The spinning, twirling and grooving were super amazing. And the Dirty Dancing-rise and spin near the beginning was astounding. They did a super, neato, groovy, far-out job! I know that Disco is dead, but when you bring it back in the right way, and show out, then it will turn out to be an amazing revival ahead.

After the 3-minute switch, Jacque & Zack took to Foxtrot for this
-penned dance to “Anything Goes” by Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga. It was really nice here. Zack brung it again. The chemistry was warm and inviting. The split at the end was sup--I mean wonderful.

Later on, Valerie and All Star Stephen Boss aka TWitch perform a
Hip-Hip bit to “Yeah!” by Usher feat. Lil Jon and Ludacris. The strange thing about this set is that both dancers aren’t wearing skin-tight costumes; their dressed as a couple that just got married. But that was awesome nonetheless. The legs part was steamy, and when Val ripped off the gown, things got steamier. Especially when she did the “Milk the Cow” bit. Like I said last week, TWitch can do any dance and slay it. Jessica did better here than in her last dance earlier.

Jessica later paired up with All-Star Ade Obayomi to do an...odd Ray Leeper-Jazz routine to “Boneless” by Steve Aoki, Chris Lake & Tujamo. It really was odd. The grungy costumes look like they come from the Lisa Frank catalogue

the moves were very iffy, and just ended up a fascinating mess. I’d be lying if I said I loved it, because I didn’t I did love the song, though; that shit is tight!!

Next, Ricky & All-Star Anya Garnis dance the Cha-Cha-Cha to “(La La La) Dare” by Shakira-ra-ra. It was a nice one, but I didn’t like it that much as the others.

Casey & All Star Mackenzie Dustman perform a Stacey Tookey-Contemp dance to “Over You” by Ingrid Michaelson feat. A Great Big World. I love the chemistry and emotion between the dancers, plus the physical contact they share is impeccably sweet. And that hold between the legs was awesome.

And finally, Zack and All-Star Du-Shaunt Stegall aka Fik-Shun perform a Hip-Hop rappin’ dance by Phillip Chbeeb to the Unlimited Gravity Mix of Awolnation’s “Sail”. And right from the beginning, it was awesome-sauce. The way they do these moves, the same moves, and match each other or do the move after the other finishes is astounding. Zack killed it, and Fik slaughtered it. I can’t explain more because it’s just so breathtaking to watch. So I’m watching this again, as I name this my Favorite Dance of the Week.

Now time for the really crappy eliminations:
Leaving This Week are--
Casey Askew & Jacque LeWarne

Maybe this week isn’t so crappy. While Casey didn’t deserve to leave, Jacque was very mixed this season and wasn’t as good as some of the male dancers she was paired with this season. She did have really nice legs, though.

Okay folks, it’s closer to down to the wire here. We’re down to the Final 4. Who will go home and who will leave the competition as America’s Favorite Dancer. We’ll see next week at it’s regular time...hopefully. Goodnight, folks!!

#SYTYCD Live Review: Ep. 7--Michael Jackson Appreciation Night

Hey, everyone.
Welcome to Michael Jackson Appreciation Night at So You Think You Can Dance. All songs featured this week are by the King of Pop himself and featured All-Stars from past seasons teaming up with the dancers for some fantastic dances.
This week, Nigel and Mary are joined by “Step Up” and “Witches of East End” star, and wife of actor and her SU co-star Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan-Tatum.
All songs this week were sung by Mr. Jackson, and this is because I’m happy not to type the songs and the name of the person who sung it. So, so happy. So here we go!!!

(Unfortunately, there are no videos this week because Fox foolishly didn't release them to YouTube, and you know Dick Clark Productions has been a bitch about anyone using unauthorized video of this season's dances.)

First up, Ricky performed a Contemporary dance with his All-Star partner Jamie Goodwin to His classic rendition of “Smile”, originally by icon of comedy Charlie Chaplin. I just can’t stop breathing from watching this dance. The splits and leg lifts were breathtaking. I don’t know if it was her billowy dress or not, but Rick and Jamie just took this dance from wonderful to breathtakingly fantastic. Great job by these two. This one is my Favorite Dance of the Week.
After his dance, Cat reveals the result from his dance last week. He is safe to dance another week. (Yes!!)

Up next, Valerie took to Salsa with All-Star partner Ryan Di Lello with “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”. I enjoyed the dance but this wasn't a great as the the others.
She is also safe for next week, and will later get SYTYCD legend tWitch as her partner next week.

Casey is up next to dance with All-Star Comfort Fedoke performing a Hip-Hop bit by Pharside & Phoenix to “Xcape”. I loved the concept, a guy caught in the web of a spider; this time, a sexy spider. They way they keep their hands on each other while doing the moves made this dance much more sexier. Comfort made this one really memorable.

Tanisha danced a Stacey Tookey-Contemp bit with All-Star Nick Lazzarini to “She’s Out of My Life”. Wow, this dance had it all; emotion, passion, authentic feeling and power. Plus it made me cry tears of joy. The song certainly help matters, too. This just couldn't get better for her. Unfortunately, they really couldn’t, because after the dance, Tanny was voted as one of the Bottom 2 Girls.

Next, Ricky dances with his partner Allison Holker to “Dirty Diana”. This was so fantastic. The chemistry between them was amazing and the flying and leg lifts was really cool.

Zack and his partner Mackenzie Dustman danced the Great White Way to one of my all-time favorite MJ hits “The Way The You Make Feel”. I usually love Broadway dances, and this is another one to love.
He was not in the Bottom 2 Guys this week.

Jacque and her partner tWitch performed the second Hip-Hop bit this week (this time by Dave Scott) to “Slave to the Rhythm”. It was fantastic. Jacque did her best, and it showed. And tWitch is just amazing in any dance he does.
Cat (and me before her) revealed that Jac was in the Bottom 2 Girls. I guessed before the result was revealed and was right.

Finally, Jessica and her All-Star partner Will Wingfield performed a Contemporary dance by Mandy Moore (who I regret to to tell you is NOT the actress/singer I originally mentioned 2 weeks ago. She’s just another woman with the same name. My apologies for the confusion) to “Earth Song”, another of my favorites. (Actually, all of the MJ classics are my faves). This one really touched me emotionally. All the moves were spectacular and flawless. Will did an awesome job with the lifting. This dance is also my Favorite Dance of the Week.

And now, the eliminations:
(The girl and guy eliminated are)
Girl: Tanisha Belnap
Guy: Rudy Abreu

I think that Tanisha and Rudy should not have gone home. They are some of the best dancers of the season and really impressed me every week. And this is not because I love Tanny’s legs, although they are a really nice set. Oh well, I will miss them and wish them the best in the future. Goodbye, Tanny & Rude!! You guys were the best.

Anyway, This week’s show was awesome. The Michael Jackson songs featured were great songs and really fit with the dances. The All-Stars were amazing as usual and dancers really stepped up well. This is my favorite show by far.

Tune in 2 weeks from Friday for the next review. Goodbye!!

America's Got Talent Weekly Review: Ep 3--Quarter Finals of Cheesiness Part 3---Even More Acts

Okay, like the title implies, a lot more acts got the chance to show America why they need to stay on and make a name for themselves. Only five acts got through to the Semifinals. So let's check out who impressed and who sucked:

Next up, Dragon House “The Agents”. I really wasn’t impressed with their act of Hip-Hop dancing. At first, I didn’t know if it was dancing, robotic acrobats or something seen in a Justin Bieber music video. Those hand movements they did remind me of the video for Madonna’s “Vogue”...and they were more like “Vague” to me. These guys weren’t bad, but really not a true Million-Dollar act. Plus, their name feels like the name of a Chinese indie-rock band and the name of their second album.

Later on, Anna Clendening, yet another singer, sang Christina Perri’s “Human”. Wow, she was really good. She had a wonderful and soothing voice that can make me sleep (in a good way, of course). Probably better in some parts than Christina herself. And I also loved the setting behind her.
(I think Emily West might have some competition in the singing department. Yeah, she’ll win it out, but still.)

After the 3-Minute stage change, Cornell Bhangra. This Bollywood-like act made their debut after a contest by the network’s Today morning show, in which viewers choose another act to make it to the AGT stage. I loved their dancing, which is called Bhangra. From start to finish. The colors, the moves, the flair, the music and the excitement! It was just all over the place. Immediately, these guys are my Favorite Act of the Week.

Next, Kieran and Finian Makepeace, a Band that sang "Lights" by Ellie Goulding. I love this song, but this one is mixed. Their rendition sounds very folk-like, which sounds wonderful. I didn't like the part where one of them picks up the guitar and plays it. So

Mike Super is a Mystifier. I didn’t like him; his act was kinda dull to me.

Adrian Romoff is a child pianist, who performed the classic and ever-so-played-over-and-over “Chopsticks”. I can’t criticize a child, because I don’t want people to hate me more they already do. It was really good, but this child doesn’t seem Millon-Dollar material.

Later on, AcroArmy, an acrobatics and dancing act. I really enjoyed their cortortions, which were seriously magical. But the dancing was mixed. I really enjoyed this one.

Wendy Liebman is up next. She is a comedian (Ugh). But don’t worry! She’s really funny. She mentions stealing money and . Far and away, she is way funnier than the male comedians that appeared this season. So funnier, that even the least funniest joke was still funnier than the strongest joke of the male one. She should go through.

Sons of Serendip, a band consisting of nothing electronic, performed a stirring rendition of “Wicked Game” by Lana Del Rey. Boy, was it stirring. The voice of the frontman really meshed well with the instruments and everything just sounded amazing.

After that, Blue Journey, one of those acts that use a screen to match movement with animation and stuff. They did a set that involves being on the floor, walking a
I wasn’t very impressed with this one. It was kinda dull. Their dancing was really good; in fact, take away the animation interaction concept and there’d be a better improvement. Just say the animation is a background and Not much would change.

Next, Christian Stoinev. He’s a hand balancing act from . I LOVE these acts; their skill, agility, and talent is always breathtaking and spectacular. This one is no exception. And much more exciting. Chris here uses blocks to hold onto!! He’s also an animal act; with his dog Scooby, he takes the excitement up a notch. He then takes Scooby with him to the balancers, and puts him on his BACK and then his SHOES!! and balances himself. That cannot be not cool.

And finally, yet another singer, Paul Ieti. He sang “You & I” (not by Lady Laga, but) by One Direction. This guy has a low, quiet, soothing voice, and it sounds really nice. It almost sounds like he could be a member of the band itself.

Now for eliminations:

Acts Going Through:
Sons of Serendip
Blue Journey
Christian Stoinev
Paul Ieti
(All these acts are well-deserved, except BJ, which was very mixed to me.)
AcroArmyJudges' Choice (3-1, Mandel dissented)

Acts Eliminated:
Dragon House "The Agents"
Anna Clendening
Cornell Bhangra
Kieran and Finian Makepeace
Mike Super
Adrian Romoff
Wendy Liebman
(It's a shame Wendy did not go through. She was the way better comedian this season. The judges better make her a Wild Card)

Oh well. Next week is the final week of Quarterfinals. I can't wait for the Semis and Wild Cards to bring Wendy back. You know the place for reviews, see you then!! Good night!

Robin Williams Has Died

Hi, everyone.

Do you feel a little shocked? Well, I do. And you will be, too.
Acclaimed actor and comedian Robin Williams has died today. He was 63 years old. He was known for his legendary career of stand-up comedy and quirky physical comedy. He later went to acting, guest starring in an episode of Happy Days as Mork, a strange alien from the planet Ork; He was sent to Earth to learn and record human life and activity. That would lead to him and co-star Pam Dawber starring in a spin-off entitled Mork & Mindy. That series would air from 1978 to 1982 and would become a huge hit, cementing Mr. Williams' career as the big thing in comedy.

He would later transition to acting starring in many iconic films such as Mrs' Doubtfire, Aladdin, Jack, Good Morning, Vietnam, One Hour Photo and many many others, winning an Academy Award from his role as Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting. He would later get back into television in 2013, starring in The Crazy Ones, a sitcom about an advertising company created and run by his character Simon Roberts and his daughter Sydney. The series lasted only one season. This series' axing is what shocked me about his death; the fact that it ended not to long ago, and that he passed away just months after it ended its' run.

Although it's currently unknown just how he died, the Marin County Coroner has released word that he died from committing suicide. Whatever happens in the coming days is clear, we lost an icon of comedy...too damn soon. He has inspired many people to get into comedy and will never be forgotten.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Williams. You are gone, but you are not forgotten.
(1951-2014)

#RisingStar Weekly Review: Ep 6--Wait No It Doesn't//Smells Like Lemons, Looks Like Urine (or the other way)

Well...I thought things would get better after the (almost-all-the-way) fantastic set of performances, we'd get a much better experience overall. Unfortunately, we didn't. Some of the performers were downright terrible and the song choices were not perfect. And I hoped that this show would be better for me watch after the painfully annoying and soul-crushing Teen Choice Awards, but I was really wrong. Really wrong.
Also, Spoiler Alert--Ms. Unicorn Tears tapped YES for EVERY SINGLE PERFORMANCE. Just lazy judging.

Joshua Peavy started off the competition performing "American Woman". I thought it was pretty amazing. I felt that he was singing the same lyrics at first as a mistake. But ince I've heard the version by Lenny Kravitz, that'll say no, there are a lot. All 3 Experts tapped "Yes". I liked the 'Do though; reminds me of someone.

(There it is! Kinda look like twins.)

Dana Williams was next up to sing "Human" by Christina Perri. She may be human, but her singing was really sub-par at best. Some parts were great, and others were very Meh. It wasn't bad; it just wasn't great, either.

April Lockhart sounded like shit singing Cyndi Lauper's immortal "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Definitely off-key. She wasn't one of the best female performers on this show, but her previous renditions were better this dreck. Brad and Luda tapped "No".

Maneepat Malloy sang "Your Song". I thought it was really good (although there were some pitch issues), but the Venison and Mr. ShuttheHellUp thought otherwise.

Next up, Audrey Kate Geiger with Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind". Wow, the voice on her. Sexy, sultry and dreamy all in one. This one was just too perfect to say it was just
"pretty good". IT WAS "VERY GREAT"! Favorite Performance of the Week for me right here.

Shameia Crawford took to the stage to perform Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper". This was Just wonderful. Her voice was always perfect but this was amazing from start to finish. Even if the song is the same with this rendition, she still makes it her own, and sounds great that way.

And finally, Rising's Resident Rocker, Jesse Kinch, with The Beatles' "Money (That What I Want)". Although I enjoyed it as much as the previous performances, I really have a feeling that this thing he's doing will continue. His choices of rock songs (while work and sound amazing), are just a strategy to ride the competition. While it works (since he can sing and rock out), it's starting to get annoying and tedious. I wish he can perform something else that's not rock n' roll. Anything else, for just one week. I guarantee he'll know it out the park, and then he'll go back to rock songs. That down-vote by Brad, while un-called-for, did make sense. He felt the same way as I did. He wanted him to sing a different genre, and I definitely agree.

Random Thoughts:
Kesha's hair looks like urine. Just saying.
That down-vote Brad made really was uncalled for. He said that the choice Jesse made for his performance was "Cliched", despite some of the other conteastants' performances were just as "cliched", if not more. So he was definitely wrong.

I'm not even doing the West Coast Votes again; not worth it.
And that's it. I don't know if I might comeback next week; we'll see. Good night!

100th POST of 2014--Maroon Mondays Awards Reviews: Teen Choice Awards 2014

OH MY GOD, I'M reviewing THE Teen Choice Awards AGAIN!!!! Ugh.
Anyway, I think this parody from Family Guy sums up how goofy, hyper-active and strange this show is. Plus, the names for the actors that come on the show is absolutely spot-on.
Brian definitely said it best:
"Every year I recognize fewer and fewer names."
Boy, was he right.

Anyway, you know what the Teen Choice Awards are, so I won't get into it. Here's last year's review for more:
http://maroonmondays.blogspot.com/2013/08/teen-choice-awards-my-review.html

This years' show (held from the legendary Shrine Auditiorium in Los Angeles) was hosted by Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey and Modern Family star Sarah Hyland. I did not like it. At all.
Here are some highlights (as I would call them, Lowlights, because of how mind-numbingly painful they were):
-Tyler was painfully awkward and sweaty here and Sarah seemed doe-eyed dull, but she was better than Tyler at being funny because she stars in the most popular sitcom on TV. Whatever the writers wrote probably knew how corny it was and loved to see how many laughs it would get, so they sent them in anyway.
--Tyler shook his butt in front of Jennifer Lopez, who's known for her butt more than her music. He ought to be lucky he's not as much of an acclaimed actor, or else that would've been a huge embarrassment on his part. Oh, and it wasn't funny. Or enjoyable. And I have more of a butt than him.
---Keeping Up With the Kardashians has 10 SEASONS (!!!!); 8 more than I could EVER fathom. Cosmos was in the same category, but lost. No more can be said about this.
----And many more to mention, but I can't because I need my brain.

But just because most of the show was horrible, doesn't mean there weren't at least a few great moments. Here are the Highlights of the show:
--There was a brief reunion of cast members of Shake It Up when Bella Thorne presented the Candies' award to former co-star Zendaya. It was so sweet and heartwarming, and nice to see CeCe and Rocky together again. (And she looks so damn good.)

--When Ariana Grande accepted the award for Choice Female Artist, she gave a beautiful and touching speech, which mentioned the hard time her and her family suffered after the passing of her grandfather. She really kept it classy and sweet ending it by thanking her fans for the love and support she received from them and to never stop doing what you loved. That speech is the best part of the night for me.

--Donald Sutherland won the award for Choice Movie Villain for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Surpringly, he's not young with washboard abs, but what makes me happy is he's not young with washboard abs. The fact that he won showed that the teenagers voting (or the producers; still keeping an open mind, here) at least sometimes have an eye for true talent in some categories. The mention to his wife of 42 years (who agreed with their choice) were beautiful, and also, the salute some audience members made during the speech was pretty cool. The other best moment of the night, folks.

I'm gonna be honest: I've watched this show for many years. This is the first time ever that I've never heard of almost anyone who steps foot on stage or is mentioned during the opening credit. Literally, almost no one I recognize. It's like I'm grateful for the repeat offenders of these awards, just so I know at least half of the people appearing. So after 90 minutes of this, I just had to turn it off. I came in at least happy, but left disgusted, annoyed, and depressed. Maybe I was too hard on the BET Awards; sure their categories are predictable but at least they have surprises and great performances to make up for it, but this is sad, shameful and frustrating. If I were a girl, I'd sadly be just like them; screaming for whomever is hotter or has nicer hair or can take off their shirt. It's that terrible. And you know what? This said it best about one thing:

This gave me the wakeup call I needed to realize: The voting system is rigged to please the teenage girls who watch every year. And this works almost every time. And to get ratings. Basically, all you have to do is show up and you're given a surfboard. If it's that easy, maybe I should star in a TV show or movie catered to teenagers, be hot and popular and just show up at the show. I just might win one. So easy.

Let's get to the performances. 85% of which I hardly know of.

Demi Lovato kicked off the show with her latest hit "Really Don't Care". I really did enjoy this performance although the appearance of featured artist Cher Lloyd was more apathetic: I thought she was lip-synching. Plus my siblings (who were watching with me) were commenting that she was a little different in her appearance (i.e. She got bigger). I thought that was uncalled for and really didn't care. She is still her.

Next, our latest Canadian export, MAGIC!, took us to Reggae-town with their monster debut "Rude". Which is about some guy asking a father for his blessing to marry his daughter, and ends up a whiny pussy when he says No, calling him Rude, that he's the one who's Rude. There could be a reason why the Dad doesn't want to give his little girl to this dude, the chorus telling what it is. He wants to start a family with her, whether the dad likes it or not. And just because he's human, he expects everything to go his way. Outside of the authentic beat, which is fantastic, the lyrics are terrible and shows how dickish the guy is.

The performance was great, however, and the band plays very well live.

RIXTON (a British band I've never heard of before last night), performed two songs. Double the less recognition. They are "Wait on Me" and "Me and My Broken Heart" (a song I heard on Rising Star by contestant Macy Kate; I thought it was a song she recorded).

I thought they were a really good band. Those are very upbeat with some nice lyrics so I'll give them a listen sometime.

Becky G perfomed her hit (God, I need to listen to radio a little bit more) "Shower". At first I thought the song is about a guy she wanted to date, but didn't, because he stinks. Anyway, it's just a typical "white girl acting like hip hip" song--Oh wait, she's Latina? Oh. My dearest apologies. I barely heard any lyrics from her because she spoke so fast and it's kinda funny that way. The beat is really nice, though; I give her that.

And finally, Jason Derulo performed "Wiggle" and "Talk Dirty", the two song that involve a woman's backside and what he wants to do with it later on. Surprisingly, I think I like this one better than Demi's. It's bouncy, amazing and fun from start to finish. The dancing was awesome, his vocals were killer and the songs aren't that hated to me anymore. The segue was awesome. The beat from "Wiggke" is irritating to many, but I enjoyed it. Although, I did say to myself when the female dancers came out, "There is no way those are real. They look more like pillows."
Anyway I enjoyed this performance so much, I wish I were there. The screaming and corny humor would be totally worth it.

On an overall scale, I thought the performances were really good. They were wonderful to listen to and the performers were perfect for the show and the teen demographic. The producers knew what they were doing and did a great job with it. I comment them for that half of the show...the other half, however...

#SYTYCD Live Review: Ep. 6--All-Stars, Lots of Guts & So Much Glory

Hey, everyone.
This week, the Top 10 dancers are joined by famous finalists who appeared in previous seasons and make their mark again. Mr. DizzyFeet and Mrs. HotTamaleTrain are joined this week by Tara Lipinski, Olympic gold-medal-winning figure skater and 1997 World Figure Skating Champion. Not bad for a fellow Philadelphian.

After the dances, Car brings the contestants to the edge of the stage for a reveal of whether or not a dancer has been put on the list of Bottom 4 dancers. I’ll let you know at the end of the opinions if a dancer is in the Bottom 4.

Up first, Bridget was joined by her All-Star partner Brandon Bryant (and not Bubbler as I first thought) to do a dance that is a fusion of Bollywood and Disco by Nakul Dev Mahajan to "Disco Khisko (Remix)" from Dil Bole Hadippa. And it was TOTALLY WICKED!! Seeing her doing the amazing steps of both styles and mixing some together was amazing. I know Bollywood can be frustrating to do and maintain, but she pulled it off in a really great way. After her dance, it’s revealed that she is one of the Bottom 2 girls in the Bottom 4 dancers.

Tanisha was up next with her partner Ryan for a Miriam Larici/Leonardo Barrionuevo-penned Argentine Tango to "The Gaucho's Pain" by Tango Jointz. You can certainly feel the passion, power and sexy in this one, so much so, it feels like it’s slapping you in the face. The quick footwork was fantastic, and Ryan picking her off her feet (twice!) was super cool.
Tanny is safe this week. (Whew! I love her.)

Later on, Emilio and his partner Jasmine Harper perform a Hip-Hop by Tabitha and Napoleon D'umo to DJ Snake’s “Get Low”. The story here is that Emilio is a snake charmer and Jazzy is his snake. Get it? Because...DJ Snake? Anyway, Goddamn was it just...goddamn. It was just amazing. Good job, you two, especially Jasmine with that pop-locking at the end.
Sadly, Emilio was named the first of the Bottom 2 Guys. (facepalm) Nigel said if Emilio did that number last week, he wouldn’t be in the Bottom 2 this week. I definitely agree.

After the 3-minute switch, Valerie and her one-night partner Ade Obayomi performed a Tyce Diorio-Jazz to “Hearts A Mess” by Mr. Somebody That I Used to Know himself, Gotye. The judges say it wasn’t great, saying they didn’t love her performance, wanted more from her and basically said things that made the Audience boo them. I thought it was good.
Valerie is spared this week.

Rudy and his All-Star partner Jenna perform a Louis Van Amstel-Cha Cha to “Maps” by Maroon 5. I thought it was a very good dance. It just wasn’t as exciting as the others. Safe

Casey and his partner Kathtyn McCormick perform a Broadway bit to "Maybe This Time" by Liza Minnelli. It was a wonderful, jazzy, perfect dance. Safe

Next, Jessica teams up with tWitch, on this Hip-Hop dance to "U Got Me Up (Underground Goodie Mix '93). I just love this one. No more words. So I name this Favorite Dance of the Week. Safe.

Finally, Zack, along with his partner Amy Yakima do a Contemp to “Europe, After The Rain",
Oh God, this dance just touched me inside so much. The emotion and passion just oozed out of these two from the second the first step is made. You cannot not see and feel that that. This one is also my Favorite Dance of The Week. Safe,

And now the eliminations.
Safe: Zack & Jacque
Eliminated: Emilio & Bridget

Tune in next week for another review. Bye-Bye!

America's Got Talent Weekly Review: Ep. 2--Quarter Finals with Cheesiness Part 2-More Acts

Welcome to Maroon Mondays' weekly reviews of the Live Shows of America’s Got Talent. As with my reviews of Rising Star and So You Think You Can Dance, this review is (slightly) less professional than the those of the TV Show websites.

Hey, everyone. So this week, the acts were...um, to say the least, middling. There were good acts that weren’t really impressive, and the were bad acts that just plain stink. So please join me in finding the better acts of the week, which by the way, were closer to the top of the show than in the middle.

First up, Hart Dance Team, which is what you expect to be. The perform to “Team” by Lorde, which name fits here and “Burn” by Ellie Goulding. It was a pretty good act, but I wasn’t very impressed. I didn’t see a lot because the skinsuits the Team were wearing clashed with the lighting, and the moves I did see were pretty good, but not really great.

Next, Loop Rawlins, a Wild West performer from Tucson who does acts with a lasso and whip. I enjoyed his performance, but I don’t think it was worthy of a million dollars. The whip act with the blasts of fire was really cool and so was the big lasso jumping; but other than that it was a kinda good act here.

After the 3-minute switch, it’s John and Andrew, a salsa dance duo. The odd thing about these two is that they’re both male, which led me to think some things...But I won’t get into that. (By the way, only one of them is gay, so that hurdle’s cleared up) These two can dance, and can dance awesome-ly. The speed and skill are something else, and the moves are phenomenal. It makes me think that Salsa dancing is just as great with two guys dancing and with a guy and a girl, if not more. These guys surely can take this act to the top if they keep it up.
I do think there will be people who won’t like this; I bet you the only people who don’t like this are conservatives and general people who hate homosexuals; probably because Salsa is the Devil’s dance, two guys doing it is heathen-bait, and a gay guy is in the troupe. Triple the Blasphemy!!! I can’t even have anymore words to describe this.
They are my Favorite Act of the Week, and not because one of them share a name with me.

Later on, an Indie/acoustic band called Livy, Matt & Sammy (not very creative) performed “Fat Bottomed Girls” (hee-hee-hee) by Queen. These guys are pretty good. I see a nice mix of Lady Antebellum and Of Monsters and Men in them, their voices match very well, and play the song as their own (and for a song called Fat Bottomed Girls in this decade, no one would know the original by Queen unless they heard that first).

Andrey Moraru (a dude by the way, originally from The Ukraine) is a hand balancer. Seems not very impressive as many people can do, but how he does it is something different entirely. This act was amazing; his balancing moves and skill leave me breathless. He can do moves with both hands and still amaze me. Plus the things he can do with his legs on his sides are fantastic. And balance and strength are key, and he’s got them both. I think I can see this guy as a Million-dollar/Vegas headlining show act. Plus, he’s also my Favorite Act of the Week.

Juan Carlos is a rollerskating dancer from Houston. Okay, either he’s funny or funny-looking. If he knows how to be funny, and can make humor from obnoxious behavior, he could have the package to make it far. His roller dancing, however, is TERRIBLE. Only things he can do are roll, skate, spin and look like a damn fool. Sure, he has Howie as a fan, but Howard wishes he never made it past his audition. I really thought he won’t make it past the first live show. He is really funny, but doesn’t have a lot of talent in anything else. He’s just TERRIBLE.

Mara Justine, 12-years-old from Atlantic City, sang Katy Perry’s “Un-Con-Di-SHUUUNN-NALL-ly” (a name I still have to get used to hearing). She sounded like a black girl when she sings at first with that much force in the vocals and low-notes, which I liked. She does not sound like a 12-year-old (maybe like a 14- or 15-year-old) and really put a voice I can enjoy into this song, unlike Ms. Katy-Kat. I did think though, that she won’t go to the semi-finals.

Up next, Arial Animation. From this name alone, I was excited for what they do. They are an act from San Fran that does matching movement with animation. Wait a minute, "they" are just one person; a woman! And boy, does she do this amazingly! Her movements are awesome, the timing is impeccable (although it was a little off in a couple places, but they were pretty minor), and she really has the talent and imagination to take this all the way.

Jaycob Curlee came to the stage to sing “Beneath You’re Beautiful” by Emeli Sande. It was slow and tedious, although that was a good thing. He adds a bit of emotion and a little power into this rendition. I honestly enjoyed it.

Later, Mat Franco, a magician from Johnston, Rhode Island. In this act, he uses fire to display his magic, with the help of playing cards. This act was awesome. Especially when Howie pulls out a card that has been mentioned at the start. First it was the wrong card Heidi chose, but Mat turned it around and then drawn the right card. This was fantastic.

Next, Darik Santos from Windsor Locks, Connecticut. He is a comedian (UGH) and makes his living by making puns jokes. Dear God, this guy is horrid. His delivery and jokes sound way better on a Disney Channel show. Even the few good ones sound strained. And I don’t care if being strained is part of the deal, he still sucks this way. I have a question:
Why are all these comedy act so awkward? Is that that the schtick they like the best, so they chose it? Maybe it’s because of the TV shows they watch with the feel of the content being awkward yet hilarious, so they said “Hey, I wanna be like that!”. You do know can be funny while not being this way? It’s how many comedians and comedy actors from today and yesteryear find success. I wish this crap can stop, because if I watch another one of these on this show, I’m gonna hit myself with a hammer until my skull cracks and try to staple my head back together while I’m still conscious (unless they’re actually funny).

And finally, Acte II, an operatic duo act, performed Whitney Houston’s immortal icon “I Will Always Love You”. I’ve never heard Operatic singers using Popular songs so it seems weird to hear them sing lyrics in a different language. Man it sounded awkward at first, but when the crescendo came, it just sent shivers through me.

And now, the eliminations:

The Acts Going Through:
Andrey Moraru
Arial Animation
Jaycob Curlee
Mat Franco
Mara Justine (Judges’ Choice)

Eliminated:
Hart Dance Team / Loop Rawlins
John and Andrew / Livy, Matt & Sammy
Juan Carlos / Darik Santos / Acte II

I thought John and Andrew would be a great choice to move on, but I can understand why. Everyone else I'm okay with being eliminated. Like I said, this week was middling, to say the least. Some of the acts impressed me, while others bombed hard. I hope next can have better performances this this, because this might be a veeerrrry middling season.
Tune in next week at this same time for the next review. Bye-bye for now!!

#RisingStar Weekly Review: Ep 7--It Gets Better From Here

Hey, everyone. Remember when I said last week when I said I was close to giving up on this show? Well, I take it back. This show got better. And I really mean Better. The singer stepped up their game, they make their mark much more than before, and they’ve impressed me in their own ways. So, with as much excitement as I can muster in a blog post...
The (quarter-)Finals are here!! So this week, the top contestants have faced the Wall and against other contestants to reach this point, and now, they must face the music (and the judges: America) to reach...another week of competition. So let's sit back, relax and enjoy my opinions of this week's performances...and stuff, shall we?

Starting of the competition, Macy Kate performed P!nk's "Who Knew". I know the original was a pop-rock song, but this one was kinda really dull. She started flat, but then got less exciting as it progressed. She later reached the Hot Seat (I'll explain that later on.) with 60% (despite the Experts' backing behind her).

Up next, Shameia Crawford, singing Emeli Sande’s future classic “Next to Me”. Already out of the park, she hit the notes perfectly. She turned the song (which already sounds like a gospel-pop song) into straight-up gospel. I think this has been the best performance of the night, and probably of the season.
So it’s definitely Performance of the Week. (Dun-dun-DAAAAA!!) [Don’t worry; Jesse’s performance will be the same, too.] She ended with 76%.

After the 3-Minute Switch, Josh Peavy performed “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” by Michael Bolton. This dude is a reason why I love this show (at least after this week). His vocals just sound perfect on whatever song he sings. He just has the voice to perform these legendary ballads. AND HE'S ONLY 16! I could only wonder what songs that aren't ballads he might perform if he ever does so, because I got a feeling that might get annoying after next week.
He reached the highest score of the night (so far AND with the Experts' Yes Vote), 85%.

April Lockhart was up next with the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris”. She does have a big indie-sounding voice, which I really liked. That That long note she held near the end was fantastic. April received 71%, with help from all three Experts, which she returned with very sweet "Thank You", which I really liked.

Maneepat Malloy performed “Stars” by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. She was really good here, with a nice soothing voice and melody, although her her singing the chorus was pretty mixed to me. I can't explain it, but it's really mixed to me. She got 68% (which Luda being the only Expert to give her a No-vote).

Dana Williams took the stage to perform “Latch” by Sam Smith--aka the guy who’s successfully touched the souls of everyone. Man this was perfect; her voice was close to melodic here. I thought it seemed hard to sing Sam Smith like it was to sing Adele (both are British, by the way), but she pulled it off in her own way, which was a big bet paying off well, with 60% (she later 65% from the West Coast viewers' vote, cementing her passage to next week.)

Later on, Alice Lee with “The Story” by Brandi Carlyle. I don’t about her here. I can’t say her voice changed for the better, and that she had a better change, but it was better than her last performance of “Wings”, which was an abomination to me (along with many others, despite the Experts’ glowing reviews).

Up next Jim Morrison’s spiritual incarnate, Jesse Kinch. He performed The White Stripes’ ever iconic “Seven Nation Army”. We all knew he was going through, but he continues to take his journey to to new highs. Every next performance is better than his last, and this has to be his best performance in the entire season. And THAT is saying something. This guy will always have my vote, even if he wins. No, WHEN he wins.

Megan Tibbits took the stage to perform “Home” by Marc Broussard. It wasn’t the best performance of hers because of the nerves. And unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for her to go through with 32%.

Lisa Punch is up next perform Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire”. I thought it was pretty good, but the emphasis on her native accent was very detrimental to the set.
Venison Whiskey said that Lis was the best dressed of the night, and she was. She also packed a little swagger when performance.

Audrey Kate Geiger came to the stage to perform “The Big Bang” by Rock Mafia. It wasn’t great, but I love the voice on her, which has remnants of Amy Winehouse, which I like. And because of the Experts’ input later (with Brad tapping in for Luda), Audrey makes it through with 65%.

Later on, Austin French sang “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys. His voice was wonderful here.
It seems from some comments under the videos of the show performances on YT, that some believe that he, and not Jesse, is a much more popular contestant and that he might just win the competition, because of his babyface looks, boyish charm and popular performance, in contrast to Jesse's rugged look and exclusivity to Rock classics. Oh well, we'll see what happens during the finals.

Sonnet Smith ended this week’s competition with “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Rey. I didn’t think it was good, I heard some pitchiness, and it just wasn't that good.

Random Thoughts:
--The idea of the Hot Seat is a good one. Instead of doing a results show, the contestant sits on the seat in front of the other contestants, dubbed the Top 6 because of their higher scores. If another contestant (and his/her performance) bests their score, they leave the competition, and the next lowest sits on the Seat, and so on.
--Kesha looks super sexy in blonde hair. I wish she would keep this look (at least so that her hair doesn't fall off from all that dye she's used).
--I read a comment from someone on YT saying that the guys are the stars of this season, with the best performances every time they step on stage.
The guys are dominating the premier season. Most girls picked the weirdest songs to compete... and voters are finding it hard to relate to. Guys pick famous songs and just KILL IT. Love Josh..
And she's right; the guys are the stars. They keep bringing the best of the best every week, and never disappoint. It's pretty obvious with Jesse, but it's there with Joshua and Austin as well. They take the competition seriously and sound like it, too.
--During 's performance (when the viewer vote reached past the goal), Macy Kate was shown rolling her eyes and pulling a fake smile. That obnoxious behavior didn't sit well with me. So I was glad she left.

No Expert Chat this week because of the many performances.

Well, I'm glad I didn't quit on the show. This one has been the best yet and almost everyone gave it their all and it paid off good. See you next week if everything gets much better from here and maybe some nicer and more awesome surprises. Tune in next week for the review. See you later!!
