Gravity Falls is Ending
Fallers, you've heard the news, and you've retreated to Sweater Town...but it's happening.
Gravity Falls is ending.
The announcement was made official by series creator Alex Hirsch earlier tonight, after increasing rumors have surfaced that the hugely popular and beloved Disney series would end after it's still-airing(-but-now-not-for-long) second season. Hirsch himself has put the rumors to rest by confirming them in this tweet
and then more fully in this wonderful post on his page on Tumblr.
It's funny, wacky and subversive like the series itself, but also heartbreaking, poignant, informative and heartwarming all at once.
In my opinion, it does make sense. Gravity Falls takes place in the titular small Oregon town for one summer. With the stories, mysteries and moments within its universe, there's no way to continue past the one summer. And with his team, Alex has said that he wanted to end it on his terms--meaning ending it on a high note, and continue it for more seasons/years with new stories that won't rank as well-regarded as those at the start and a declining quality that fans and even the crew would not appreciate. So this really is a very well-done decision by Alex to end it at season two.
But it still hurts to expect, hear about and realize it.
Gravity Falls has become (and still will be) one of the most inventive, creative and entertaining animated series of the Animation Era of the 2010s...or any other era. With its mind-blowing storylines and mysteries; beloved, multi-dimensional and very-likable characters; and moments that you haven't seen in some other series of the time (or any other time) that will make your jaw drop, face freeze, tears flow, and brain implode, you can't be blamed for feeling horrible to see your favorite show ending so abruptly (with just two episodes left) and that there will be no more episodes to wait ungodly amounts of time to see.
It just...makes you cry.
But if anything...we should be grateful for such a series like this.
It came after a new renaissance in television animation has took shape, and blew up as other shows came into the limelight to make it more well-regarded era of television, and has become one of the shows to watch on TV, for not just kids, but also teenagers, adolescents and full-grown adults. And it has such a remarkable scope on comedy, horror, thriller, fantasy and science fiction that you still can't find yourself grasping, even after watching a full season (or two) and putting all of the clues. It's just that brilliant!
So, as we try to grasp this situation (and probably fail), it's time we buck and accept it. Gravity Falls is ending
(--not cancelled by the way)
and that the final episodes of season 2 ("Weirdmageddon II: Escape from Reality" and the hour-long "Weidmageddon III") will also be the final two episode of Gravity Falls. (I know I can't hold back my tears, either.)
And all we can do is thank everyone who's been a part of the show for giving us a show to love, remember and cherish. So...
Thank you, Jason Ritter and Kristen Schaal for voicing one of the best and coolest 12-year-old twins we all know and love so much.
Thank you, Linda Cardellini for voicing one of the most lovely, feisty, bravest, boldest, and flippin' Corduroy-iest teenage females we all know and love. Thank you to everyone who's voiced a character in any capacity. Thank you to all of the writers, directors, producers, animators and all in between (even though that may be all it) for working so dang hard together for days, weeks, even months on end to put in a show we could watch together--not as viewers--as fans. Thank you Disney, for taking a huge chance on such a series like this, actually giving it attention and worthy promotion and letting it pay off in the way it did (we all appreciate it). And thank you, ginger-haired dude, for not only voicing the the dude who's too awesome for this planet (ditzy, but awesome) and old man who can scam, cheat, lie, grump and beat a pterodactyl for family into our hearts, but also introducing the world to a series that you created with your bare hands and nurtured it into a phenomenon that will live on forever like a cute farm hog.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you all.
