My Thoughts on Blogger's "Porn Content Policy"

Hey, everyone.
If you have a blog website powered by Blogger, you can check this out.

Now, last month, Blogger (a blog service that publishes blogs, like my blog) announced that it will implement a new policy, forcing blogs to end up private in it contains sexually explicit content or graphic nudity. But in a twist I didn't see coming (mostly because I didn't look for much updates since then), many Blogger blog owners were pissed and responded to the policy by demanding the policy be nixed. The higher-ups listened (well, had to) and the backed down and stopped the plan from happening.

Here's what I think:
I think this was bullshit. This is a blog; here, people say their own opinions on what they want, when they want to and should say what they want, and say what they feel. Even if said opinion contained sexual content or imagery. And this is a website on the Internet; even if it spouts stupid shit all the time, it's something that contains something that has your personal opinion. And yeah, the First Amendment has a part in this, too; but that's obvious.

At the time, I didn't say a thing about it, as I think my blog doesn't contain such. But then I remembered a post I published earlier in the year about a man cheating on his wife, with the wife committing revenge by cutting off his penis. Because of that, and the announcement coming in weeks later, it had me thinking "This could be my fault. This can't be a coincidence."

Had this policy been fully implemented, many bloggers with sites like this would be deprived of their actual voice and opinions (and in the case of pron blogs, their moans and macho-ness) and have to try to say what the concept of their blogs imply. So it's good thing that the backlash came, and in full effect.

I'm happy that the higher-ups at Google have decided to relent on this, and that we as bloggers will continue to say their personal opinions without beating around the bush. Again, I do think I may have a fault in this, and if I did, I apologize. I really don't want to ruin the verbal freedom of other bloggers directly or indirectly, and giving them less of am option to discuss their feelings on taboo subject more publicly.
